Update on the Pastor Harry Vester Jones case

Pastor Harry Vester Jones is ordered to court on March 31. Jones has entered a plea of not guilty. 

"The pastor of New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Calera facing a first-degree rape charge has been ordered to next appear in court on March 31 after a hearing this week.

Harry Vester Jones, 50, who lists an address on Miami Place in Birmingham in court records, had been scheduled for a status hearing in Shelby County Circuit Court in Columbiana on Monday morning. Judge Dan Reeves today issued an order that continues Jones' case until his next status hearing on March 31."

A Review of Religious Hypocrisy in 2013

I reported on 122 new cases of religious hypocrisy in 2013. Most of these crimes and misdeeds were committed by pastors, but a few other religious miscreants made the list. Most of the crimes were sexual in nature with sex crimes against children topping the list.

I've listed the Religion/Sect and number of stories below. Unknown Protestant tops the list. In these cases I could not establish a sect, but I do know that the cases do not involve Catholics. For the most part, they were independent churches that fall into either the small independent church category or they were larger nondenominational community churches.

Baptists top the list as the most frequent offenders, but this may be because I do not report many Catholic cases because they are covered by other sources. In any case, there is something wrong in Baptist land.

Pastor Harry Vester Jones indicted for rape

Baptist pastor Harry Vester Jones of New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist church in Calera was indicted on a single count of first-degree rape. The alleged victim was an adult female. 

Calera police arrested Jones on a warrant for first-degree rape following an investigation concerning a rape claim reported to police on April 9, according to information released by the agency.

The incident happened on April 2 and involved a 39-year-old woman who is not a Calera resident, according to police. The agency did not provide further details about the allegations.

Jones is listed as the Senior Pastor at his church and uses a "Dr" title, as in Senior Pastor - Rev. Dr. Harry S. Jones. He received his Doctrine of Divinity in May of 2004 from Tennessee School of Religion, and unaccredited institution. Figures.
