The band Soviet Soviet deported

Thanks Trump… We deported the Italian band Soviet Soviet after denying then entry to the U.S. and jailing them overnight. Apparently, the band members were questioned for hours over the possibility that they might be paid for performing at a promotional concert. What the hell is going on?

The band, which is based in the city of Pesaro, landed in Seattle on Wednesday afternoon. It was traveling under ESTA (also known as the Visa Waiver Program), which allows citizens of nearly 40 countries to travel to the United States without having to obtain a visa. Source:Anastasia Tsioulcas

They sure sound dangerous to me…

The real cost of Trump’s immigration policy

Antidoping will not able to perform at Skanking Reggae Festival March 11 at The Shrine Expo Hall due to difficulties in renewing their visas. Damit Trump. What do have against a Mexican Ska? These guys are hot.

I’ve still got Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra and The Slacker though…

I know so little

I had never heard of Laura Jane Grace until a few minutes ago when I watched this video of Grace, Miley Cyrus and Joan Jett covering Androgynous. I know so little of the world dispite having lived in it for over 50 years. I love the discovery process. I love learning. I love hearing a Graces’ distict voice and thinking, who is this?

I know Cyrus and I know Jett, but Grace is new. I love her voice and stage presence. So, I read and learn...

Baltimore by Prince

Prince released Baltimore today. The song honors Freddie Gray.

I drove through Baltimore last Sunday. I did not stop. I felt helpless. I still do.

Girl Crush and homophobic Christians

I’m not a country music fan, but I can see why people would like Girl Crush by Little Big Town. Apparently the song, which is not gay themed, confuses Christian country music fans and the complained about it promoting the gay agenda. As a result of the pressure, country music stations are pulling it from rotation.

I feel sorry for America. We deserve better.

Rare Photos From the Early Days of Blondie

Now I feel really old…

Rare Photos From the Early Days of Blondie:

"This year marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of Blondie, and to celebrate, the band’s co-founder, guitarist, and songwriter, Chris Stein, has released a new photography book remembering its glory days."

My favorite song of 2013 is Get Lucky by Daft Punk.

This pick is way out of charter for me, but I've loved this tune since my first listen, which was in my truck with wife and son after a visit to The Farmers Market in Los Angeles back in summer. Electronica is not my genre. I really don’t like it, but I'm hooked on this song and on the whole album. What can I say… people change. what was your favorite new song this year? - Mojoey reflecting on the 2013

Dark Side of the Moon selected for National Recording Registry

I love this song.

Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon was selected by the US Library of Congress for the National Recording Registry!

The recording that received the highest number of public nominations for this year's registry was The Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd's groundbreaking 1973 album.

The library said it was an example of "brilliant, innovative production in service of the music".

I still remember the first time I listened to it, with my hip little sister of all people. Damn, that was a long time ago.

My current theme song

So much to Say by Dave Mathews Band.

Bob French has died

I was listening to a random playlist of New Orleans jazz as I was driving to Newbury Park this morning. I usually start my commutes with music. It helps steady my nerves for the coming fight with LA traffic. I switched over to NPR after a few songs. The first thing I heard was that Bob French had died. Weird. Right?

Robert "Bob" French Sr., the longtime leader and drummer of the Original Tuxedo Jazz Band and an outspoken, at times controversial, WWOZ-FM deejay, died on Monday, Nov. 12, after a long illness. He was 74.

Bob French was one of those names that I always associated with New Orleans jazz. I am saddened by his passing.

Dead Combo – wow

Thank you Anthony Bourdain and No Reservations for turning me on to a great new band. I caught episode 128, “Lisbon”. The band Dead Combo (Tó Trips and Pedro V. Gonçalves) was featured in an early segment. I loved their sound. Enjoy.

I’ve always enjoyed No Reservations. I watched the final episode a few days ago. I’m sad to see it go. I like Tony’s attitude, plus I identify with him a little. I’ve traveled a lot and been all over the world myself. The best travel experiences are always built around food (and beer).

Pussy Riot “Putin Lights Up the Fires”

We should all boycott Russia to show our solidarity with Pussy Riot, just like the Black Keys did.

R.I.P. Adam Yauch MCA

I must admit that my appreciation of the Beastie Boys awoke late in life. I was not a fan in the 80s, but the 90s was a different story. My son Jon played them around the house all the time, I learned to like them, and then to love them. This song, So What cha Want, is my favorite. RIP MCA

I wonder if Cee Lo thinks ‘all religion’s is true’

By now we all know that Cee Lo Green butchered John Lennon’s classic song Imagine with the following change to the lyrics.

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And all religion’s true

I wonder if Cee Lo thinks these examples of religion are true?

In India, a seven year old girl was ritually murdered and her liver was sacrificed to the gods for a better harvest.

"A seven-year-old girl was sacrificed by two persons superstitiously believing that the act would give a better harvest," Narayan Das, the police chief of Bijapur district, told AFP by telephone.

In Boliva, a Christian Pentecostal pastor murdered his sister during an exorcism. He claimed the devil entered his body and pushed his sister’s head under water.

"An evil spirit entered me, took control of my hand and began to submerge my little sister," Marca purportedly told police. "Satan was inside the tub."

In Worcester, Massachusetts, a catholic priest, Rev. Lowe Dongor, stands accused of possession of child pornography. He faces defrocking for his misdeeds… and prison.

Following Vatican officials’ “clarification” that child pornography possession is included in the grounds for removal from the priesthood, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester has asked the pope to defrock Dongor.

Islamic religious terrorists bombed a Nigerian Christian church, Killing as many as 43 people. 73 people were wounded.

“I was able to identify 20 parishioners that died in the explosions,” Achi said in an e-mailed statement today. “Yesterday, they brought in a list of 23 others confirmed to have died in the blast.”

In Israel, fundamentalist Jews spit on little girls.

It seems that a sub-group of the ultra-Orthodox Hasidic Jews (known in Israel as Haredi) of that village have been stoning, taunting, cursing and spitting at an 8-year-old girl as she walks to school each day.  The girl herself is an Orthodox child who, along with her mother, dresses in the "modest" style common among Modern Orthodox and Hasidic women.

And in Ohio, watch out for your beards. A break away Amish sect faces hate crime charges for cutting the beards off of other Amish men, and the hair off of Amish women.

The five attacks between September and November involved cutting women’s hair and men’s beards and hair. That’s considered deeply offensive in Amish culture.

I see nothing ‘true’ here Cee Lo Green. It is just more examples of hate and ignorance, plus a propensity towards violence that I find shocking. But then I…

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too

And I find hope.
