Parents kill their child through prayer

Carl and Raylene Worthington prayed over their sick daughter Ava. She was 15-months old and suffering from pneumonia. Antibiotics would have cured her. Instead she died a horrible death while her parents watched. Religion is dangerous.

The imagery in this next sentence struck me as particularly  goulash.

A small church cemetery is lined with the graves of dozens of children — suggesting an extraordinary increase over the average death rate for children in the United States…

It brings home how little we can do to address the problem. Our only recourse is to persecute after the fact. How sad is that?

The deaths also typically involve young children because "by the time kids are school age, there are others involved in their lives — friends, neighbors, family, teachers that may be aware if there's a serious issue,"

Ouch. We only catch them with oversight. At least we can set an example with Carl and Raylene. 15 to 20 years to think about their mistake sounds about right.

Priest arrested for hiding another priest's child porn

What would you do if you friend were being investigated for sexual crimes against a child? Would you go to his house and erase the images in an attempt to destroy the evidence? No? Well that's what Rev. John Schneider did.

A warrant accuses Schneider of going to former music minister Paul Berrell's apartment on May 18 and deleting hundreds of photos from Berrell's computer while he was being investigated. A grand jury indicted Berrell on two counts of indecent liberties with a minor and a count of statutory sex offense.

Diocese of Charlotte Bishop Peter Jugis accepted Schneider's resignation last week, Hains said. The bishop and Schneider have known each other since 1983, when they were ordained together in the Charlotte diocese. The diocese covers churches in western North Carolina.

Well… at least he has his relationship with the accused. Perhaps they can share a jail cell together.

Organized religion warped lives

FLDS is an organized religion, albeit one with 10,000 misguided members. Its “Lost Boys” are a classic example of religion run amuck. Young boys were cast out of their community because they represented competition for the scarce resource of young brides. The inside story was far worse, sexual abuse, incest, physical abuse, and rape. All in the name of religion.

Warren Jeffs used church tenets to satisfy his own perverse sexual appetites and to control every aspect of members' lives, Brent claims. As prophet — the title the sect gave its leader — he banned almost all music and all literature except the Book of Mormon and the Bible. He even banned dogs and, most infamously, ejected many young boys from FLDS families.

What bothers me most is that it will not end. FLDS will continue to thrive in its little niche for decades to come. The abuse will take a different form, but it will continue. We are too polite to force its end.

Pastor Harris tries for bond

JamesRichardHarris Pastor James Richard Harris wants out of jail on a bond, and I say, don't give it to him.

Harris is accused of luring to his home teenagers-- some Glades Central High football players-- video-taping them, and engaging in sex acts with four different minors.

The poor bastard, he has high cholesterol. I don’t think they can treat that in jail. Nope, it is best to let him out. With high cholesterol, there is no way he can bother an other underage children because of… well the high cholesterol. Do they thing we are idiots?

Harris is accused of video taping sex acts with underage children. Performing sex acts on numerous underage children, and I’m still unclear if he’s ever resolved the whole beating people with a bat incident.

Let’s keep this pastor in jail until his trial.

Life sentence for youth pastor Matthew Anderson

Don't worry Matthew. A life sentence for a pedophile in Texas is actually only about three years. Your sentence will end in no time.

A former New Braunfels youth pastor was sentenced Thursday to life in prison for sexually assaulting a teenage boy.

Jurors took 45 minutes to decide punishment on Matthew Andersen, who was found guilty Wednesday on seven counts of sexual assault and indecency with a child.

Because Andersen had a prior conviction in a similar case in 2003 while he was a youth pastor in Alabama, a relatively new Texas law provided for "enhanced punishment," which made the defendant eligible to receive a life sentence.

Before the friends and family of Matthew Anderson object to my callousness, let me just say that you reap what you sow. I’ll be sure to post his obituary if it makes the press.

Sexting ends another pastor’s career

It's almost like Pastors don't understand technology. When the Reverend David Walter sent sexual and intimate text messages to a 16-year-old girl in his parish, did he expect God would erase the evidence? He might as well have painted it in letter 10 feet high on the side of his church.

Mr Waters made a full confession, admitting that on various occasions before May 2007 he sent sexual messages to her - behaviour which he later accepted was ' scandalous and offensive'.

He was suspended from his position as rector of St Catwg's Church in Gelligaer, South Wales, in June 2007, but as the girl, understood to be a regular member of his congregation, was 16 at the time, police did not investigate.

I have a hard time with sending people to prison for sexting. Ending a career is enough punishment.

Religion kills another child

The Good Atheist has the compelling story of a Muslim nutball who killed her innocent young child via starvation. Her crime? she was possessed.

Khyra Ishaq was, by all accounts, your typical happy-go-lucky 12 year old living in Birmingham. Her mother, a recent convert to Islam, pulled her from school and began to isolate all of her children away from the outside world. Her excuse was that they had been bullied in school over their attire…

This Little Light, by Christa Brown

This Little Light One of the great joys of my life is reading. In the last year no less than 6 bloggers I know have contacted me about books they have in work. I love the fact that I have a chance to read the work of people I know and respect.  Christa Brown of Stop Baptist Predators authored This Little Light: Beyond a Baptist Preacher Predator and His Gang. Christa tells the story of her abuse by a small town Baptist pastor and her subsequent ordeal dealing with SBC bureaucracy. I know some of her story from her blog, but this book promises to answer many questions.

Christa is a formidable warrior in the fight against Baptist pedophiles. Her work inspires me. I am honored to have a signed copy of her story.

There is a paragraph in the introduction that answer the question, why tell your story. Christa answers,

The answer is because the story goes beyond the personal. The story is about an institutionalized inertia that cloaks evil behind a veil of denial and leaves countless kids at risk.

Honestly, I can not think of a better reason to write a book. You can buy it at Barnes & Noble or Amazon, or order it at your local bookstore.

I’ll post my review in a few weeks, until then here are two reviews.

It's prison for two Baptist pastors

Richard Wimberly Cunningham and Philip Ladd Cunningham both pleaded guilty to grand theft for stealing 3.1 million from Calvary Baptist Yorba Linda Church and School. Both will serve two years in prison. Yay!

Prosecutors said the Cunninghams wrote checks to themselves on eight accounts belonging to the Calvary Baptist Yorba Linda Church and School. They also used church credit cards for personal expenses.

It was a lifestyle thing. One must keep up appearances in ostentatious  Orange County. Not me though, I live in North OC… the poorer cousin so to speak. At least the church sued the pastors to recover some of the lost funds.

I often wonder when I read about this type of crime. How does theft of this scale reconcile with the simple faith and lifestyle of Jesus? I’m not sure being a Christian today has anything to do with what Jesus intended. Of course, I don’t believe in the biblical version of Jesus, but that is a different story.

LDS Bishop arrested for sexual assault

Keith Gillins is a 61 year-old high school teach, coach, and Mormon religious leader. He stands accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student.

"He is well-known. He's done a lot of good. He's a good man, and it is upsetting to the community and the parents and the students and everybody. It's upsetting to everybody," said Millard County Sheriff Robert Dekker.

Charging documents state the crimes occurred in November of last year, but investigators are looking at the possibility of other encounters.

I don’t get many cases of Mormon sexual abuse. I’m not sure why. It could be my news filter does not catch them, or it could be the lay priesthood does not breed as many pedophiles. I plan to look deeper. Does anyone have any advice?

Watching those Christians

Airporr

I need to remember that Christians are always on the hunt for new converts. I tend to forget because I don't think about it much. They never stop, ever, nor are they likely to.

I had some time to kill last Wednesday night. My wife’s flight from Dallas was delayed because of some nasty thunderstorm, so her 8:30 pickup was more like 11:00. I killed time with a sundown dinner at Kincaid’s in Redondo Beach. A couple of beers and a big piece of prime rib sure hit the spot.

I arrived at LAX by nine and started to do some people watching. I shot the picture with my blackberry PAS. I was bored and had no prospects. Plus my foot was starting to hurt. I noticed a man with a three ring binder working the exiting crowd. I thought he was trying to sell limo services. I was wrong. He was witnessing.

He worked the crowd hard. His attention seemed focused on single male travelers, or younger Muslim women. The Muslim women wanted nothing to do with him. I counted 11 conversations, all were quick. The men he stopped all talked to him. A few even exchanged hugs. I stopped counting after 15.

The Christian witness was a tall black man in a poorly cut suit. He looked neat, but you could tell the suit was his witnessing uniform. I started to wonder if he were on his own or if this was a group witnessing technique. I walked from terminal 4 to terminal 5 looking for people like him. I spotted two more dressed almost exactly alike. One was older and one was much younger, like 18 or 19.

I walked back to my bum proof bench to wait. Time passed slowly. A young woman started talking to me. She was worried that her friend had not arrived to pick her up. I listened to her story and offered some advice. It was a pleasant exchange. Newcomers to LA do not realize how big the city is. We talk about distance in terms of time. 30 miles at 5 pm is 1.5 hours, at night its 20 minutes. I think the Christian witness thought I was horning in on his territory. I had no luggage after all. He walked over to talk to me once the girl departed.

After asking what I was doing (I told him waiting), he started his spiel. He was nice. His three-ringed binder held laminated pages with neatly typed bible verses and phrases. I starting thinking of Reverend Wayne Pearly Gates and three-ringed binders from Snow Crash.

The franchise and the virus work on the same principle: what thrives in one place will thrive in another. You just have to find a sufficiently virulent business plan, condense it into a three-ring binder — its DNA — xerox it, and embed it in the fertile lining of a well-traveled highway, preferably one with a left-turn lane…

Without asking if I was a Christian, he asked if I would like to pray with him. I declined. He started to show me bible verses that were important to him and to talk about his walk with Jesus. It was here that I told him I was an Atheist and that he was wasting his time. He seemed agitated at the news that I was an Atheist and said the most bizarre thing, “Jesus loves you, but God will curse you for rejecting his love”. He walked away and did not look back.

I waited another 30 minutes for my wife to arrive and then started to walk to her gate. I noticed my ankle was swollen and hurt like hell. God had cursed me with a gout attack. The next two days would be living hell. If you’ve never experience gout, just imagine crawling across broken glass and then rolling around in rubbing alcohol, the pain is comparable.

Ok, I know God did not curse me. I shot myself in the foot by drinking beer and eating lots of protein. But that asshole of a Christian had wished me harm for no good reason other than my atheism and it pissed me off. I keep thinking he thought himself a winner in our exchange and it bothered me that he went back to his work free to curse the next free thinker to cross his path. He talked to 23 people in an hour. If he and his friends keep it up, the numbers are huge. They will never stop.

Police say missing Pastor Jose Rosa touched young boys

Don't they all?

Jose Rosa The pastor faces charges of endangering the welfare of children, indecent assault and corruption of minors. These charges stem from several incidents where police claim Rosa inappropriately touched and kissed several boys. The boys were 9 and 10 years old at the time.

The odd this is that Pastor Jose Rosa is missing. He skipped town (or fell in a ditch), a few weeks before the charges were files. I wonder if there is a connection?

Rosa was the pastor of Congregation Menonita Shalom in New Columbia.
