Believe it or not, this Virgin Mary is 20 feet tall. It overlooks Anaheim St. and Neptune Ave. in Wilmington. See the example below. It’s huge, but only one of many in the area, most are much smaller.
I don’t get it. It’s not art, at least I don’t think it is art. It is not pleasing to look at. Or is it? And why the roses? Hundreds of roses all around the building. It covers the graffiti well, that must be it. Or, maybe not. One never knows when it comes to religious icons.

Think of it as another graffiti, maybe by a hispanic gang. That might help.

Then again, I'm living in a place where graffiti artists move into art galleries on a regular basis, so I might be under the influence of the culture.
Oh - the difference between this and the crucifix in the school (IMO): this is his personal adornment of his own building. The school, on the other hand, is a place that is state-run and meant for the indoctrination -- I mean, education -- of children, of all walks of life. For me, that's why I agree with the decision to remove the crucifix, but would not agree with someone telling this guy to cover up his 20 ft Virgin.
And it probably IS a graffiti deterrent/cover, if that's a problem in that area. I see it all the time where I live.
