Just say no to Huckabee

A friend mentioned he would be voting for Huckabee in the upcoming primary. I nearly choked. Huckabee is not the candidate we need. He is a fundamentalist Baptist preacher turned politician. He believes the bible is the literal word of God. He believes the bible over science. And more to the point, he has a long history of letting his religious ignorance guide his politics. Take his position on AIDS in the 90s.

As a candidate for a U.S. Senate seat in 1992, Huckabee answered 229 questions submitted to him by The Associated Press. Besides a quarantine, Huckabee suggested that Hollywood celebrities fund AIDS research from their own pockets, rather than federal health agencies.

In 1992, Huckabee wrote, "If the federal government is truly serious about doing something with the AIDS virus, we need to take steps that would isolate the carriers of this plague."

Source: Huckabee wanted to isolate AIDS patients - Yahoo! News. By Andrew DeMillo

This was the fundie view at the time dispit overwhelming scientific evidence that AIDS could not be spread by causal contact. Now he's singing another tune. My guess is that he is not being entirely honest.

My friend - he always gets it wrong too.

Yes, I agree. But which would you rather? The candidate that cloaks his views in order to be elected, or the one that's honest from the outset?

At least Huckabee is somewhat different from the seemingless endless parade of rich, white guys the Republicans have managed to field. Oh, hang on: isn't Huckabee a rich, white guy? :-)

Hillary for President! :-)

Because your typing and spelling are always so precise, I can't tell whether your tag "Mike Muckabee" is an unintentional or intentional howler. I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you went out of your way to key in that M instead of an H.

If it had been up to me, I would have changed that H to a less subtle letter that comes a bit earlier in the alphabet. But I still like your version of the name better than the original.

If you want to be scared shitless about the potential future of this country, go troll the pro-Huckabee blogs. You won't find a bigger collection of ignorant, bigoted people anywhere.

CAROLYN ANN...I agree, in HILLARY for PRESIDENT, as the best choice. Being female, it never expected by the powers that be, that she ever become president, fate, duty, as circumstances bringing such event. Religious organizations cannot by chance, seen to openly attack her, such bringing the people's wrath. It after the election when HILLARY in greatest danger, such time the people's support the greater need.

It was a tossup between the choosing the "F" and the "M". I went with the "M". It seemed to fit better.

This man cannot be elected.

There is not a single republican I can vote for. As a libertarian, I face a scary election cycle. I will not vote for anyone with ties to the fundies.

So It is down to Hillary, Obama, or whoever wins the Democratic primary.

I was hoping Obama would stay clear of the tent rally pitch, but during the recent outing with Oprah there were lots of color purple cadences. It seems impossible to be considered a serious choice for the presidency unless the candidate is seen to be doing God duty at least part of the time.

Huckabee scares me...It's fine to believe what you believe; that's great. But when you start mixing your own PERSONAL religious views with politics, you're asking for it. (Do we REALLY want to be the "Christian" version of Iran or Saudi Arabia?)
