President Aquino laid his political future on the line in the Philippines this week. He took a step towards freeing his people from the sexual and reproductive chains imposed by the Catholic church. Aquino is willing to risk ex-communication to stand up for the right of his people to have access to contraception and reproductive health care. Aquino is fighting the good fight.
The issue pits the powerful and conservative Catholic establishment, which says contraceptives are as sinful as abortions, against reformers who want more openness about condoms and other birth control in the impoverished Southeast Asian nation to slow population growth and help prevent disease.
I can only hope that our own leaders will someday fight the good fight too.
