30 years ago today–John Lennon

30-year-ago I was working a shit job in the USAF. I was driving to work when the news broke that John Lennon had been murdered. I stopped the car, got out on the shoulder, and puked. It was one of the few times in my life where I broke down and cried.

What were you doing when you heard the news?

I don't remember when I heard of it, but I was in the Air Force, too, at F.E. Warren AFB in Wyoming at the time.

I was something of a Beatles nut in the '60s, but I'll admit I lost interest in time. Still, I consider them collectively the Beethoven of popular music: they, almost single-handedly, changed its course. Today, I tend to prefer "classical" or, for popular music, ABBA, but there's no denying the genius of the Beatles or that they deserve their place in history. Far more than a quarter of that credit goes to John Lennon.
