Living in Los Angeles , one becomes accustomed to the endless 75 to 80 degree days. I tell everybody, just wait till September, it's the hottest month of the year. Nobody ever believes me. At 4:00 PM, Saturday it was 101 degrees at my house. At 5:30 today (Sunday) it's 98. Tomorrow's project high is again 98. It's this time each year when I regret not owning an air conditioner. We escape the the heat be going to the cinema. I've already seen three movies this weekend. I'm sure a fourth is destined for tomorrow.
Becoming Jane - Friday night with the wife. I was one of only three or four people in the cinema with any testosterone. Becoming Jane was excruciating, even my wife, who is a huge Jane Austin fan, thought so. The plot is simple, the characters undeveloped, the story line predictable. The only thing the movie had going for it was the previews.
On Saturday we watched the delightful Balls of Fury. A film I will only watch once. It was funny and just stupid at the same time. As a movie used as an excuse to escape the heat I give it high marks. As a comedy, well... it's below average. I laughed at the stupid jokes, Christopher Walken was hilarious, and George Lopez had a few one liners. This is not a movie I will pick up for my DVD collection. Once is enough.
Today (Sunday) we watched Superbad. The first five minutes had me thinking I should take my 12-year-old son to the lobby. The R rating is well deserved. Superbad was a little hard to follow at first, but as the plot developed, it became more coherent. By the movie's midpoint, we were hooked on the plight of three high school nerds, and laughing our heads off. McLovin is the man.

No A/C, even in LA?
For some reason we bought a house in southern NJ without central air. Why, oh why? With the last week or so being in the same region as you're in now, it's been a little brutal!
(And as I don't ride a motorcycle without the gear, even that's not much help!)
Here's to subzero temperatures, and snow in LA...

Milk was a bad choice.
No A/C - we almost never need it. Almost. It's still in the 90s at 9:00 PM!
Same goes for a heater. We have one, but I can't remember the last time we used it. It's always about 70 to 80 here. Paradise except for the 10 million other people in LA.
Oh, poor baby! You want to experience what a hot summer is like, visit me in Mississippi for a bit. Seriously though, I think I'd want A/C in LA to help filter the air if not to cool things down.
I want to see Super Bad. It sounds good.
It can get pretty hot in Michigan for stretches in July-August. We had many days near 100 degrees for a couple of weeks (remember, MI is surrounded by water so it can get very humid). After that it's downhill. I myself don't mind that kind of heat what I can't stand is when it gets so damn cold in the winter that your car refuses to start. That's cold, like 30 below sometimes.
Vjack - I've never had the pleasure of a summer in Mississippi. I've done a bunch of time in Waco and Del Rio. It's like hell on earth.
Larro - I've heard stories of this thing called cold. Last year it got down into the 40s. I almost bought a jacket.
Oh come on guys? 90-100 degree weather? Pssht!! I have that for what at least 6-8 months of the year.. ok ok, maybe 5-6 of 90+. Today for example it started off at a cool 89 right now at about 11 it is 95 and the high today is expected to be 107 which is actually from the airport where it is actually cooler by 1-3 degrees everyday. Depending on your location in the valley. After about 1pm to 6pm is probably your hottest time of day. I got home about 1am and it was still in the 90s.
A/C is a leisure here being that a power bill will be 3-5x greater than in winter. My winter bill for a 2 bd 2 ba condo is about $50-60 my summer is anywhere between $120-300. I have seen people have $6-700 power bills for one month.
I have cut my bills down by not using my A/C while at work. I turn it on at night when I come home, and turn it off when I leave in the morning's. Saves about 150 a month.
Otherwise I will go to the casino and cool off in the NICE 72 degree A/C sip on a soda or juice and maybe go see a movie.
Johnny - Vegas weather blows - I do the pool thing. Float in circles with a big football shaped glass full of beer.
Btw - I was in Needles once without an air conditioner. It was 122. That's my gold standard for hot.
my first visit to El Centro, CA was 126 in the shade...my friend and I drove in a car without A/C. That is my gold standard for HOT!

At least in Jersey we don't have those horrible "inversions" they get in New York City. It's a fancy term for "smog"; the air turns yellow, and heavy. It becomes quite horrible to breathe.

OK - I think I win the hotness thing. I played disc golf yesterday at 5:00 PM. I spent two hours in the park in 104 degree weather. Besides a little dehydration - I had a blast.
I think my worst stint in the heat was a few summers back, I had a brother in law who was in Kuwait doing a tour (before the Iraq War) and he was calling in and talking to all of us, he said the temp in the morning was 112 degrees and the high (for that day) was low at about 121. I remember working outside on one of the first cars I had trying to drop the gas tank. It was 118 with a high expected of 120+. We told him we felt his pain, then again he did have 50lbs of gear on. Either way, I have learned that less clothes isn't always better. Jeans suck. Cotton breathes, and those cooling rags work wonders. I now have a full Camel Pak for such occasions. I plan to get some smaller ones without much space to carry for running and other activity.
I just wish i wasn't so fat so I could deal with the heat better lol!
and Joe, I would have to say that playing disc golf at 104 is pretty crazy. Sounds like fun though, lol.
