I would prefer it if Christians became Atheists through a process of reflection involving logic, reason and deep thinking. It pains me to hear of Christian women who have lost their faith because their pastor is alleged to have sexually abused them.
Pastor John Olivares stands accused of five counts of sexual battery. Two women and one teen from The Cathedral of Faith have come forward with complaints of inappropriate touching and fondling. Of course, Olivares professes his innocence.
Olivares said he never did anything more than gently hug church members - nothing sexual.
"As God is my witness I have never done that," Olivares said.
Fortunately for all concerned, God will not be called to the witness stand in his trail. His five victims should be sufficient to assure a conviction.
I have a problem with part of the story. I women named Cleava Dicky apparently enabled Olivares actions by not reporting when he had touched her. She reached her limit only after her daughter reported the same abuse.
Dickey said Olivares fondled her but she chose not to report it until she said things got worse.
"I found out it went from me to my daughter," Dickey said. "She was in the living room and she said, ‘Mama, I need to talk to you. Brother John is touching us.' They were devastated."
I do not understand what motivates a woman to tolerate abuse from the likes of a pastor. Maybe it's just my maleness, but a single incident would be enough to for me to confront the issue directly, especially if an authority figure were involved.
