Don Imus - what do I really think?

I figured it was time to answer the 50 or so emails I have received requesting to hear my voice. I don't know why some of you want to put a voice with my words, but hey, it is your ears.  I've been meaning to make a post on Don Imus - give it a listen.

Excellent podcast. It's good to explore all the possibilities of the medium we have at our disposal.

Very cool. I have to admit that I've never considered doing a podcast before. You did a great job.

It's become almost an entertainment genre ... hate packaged with humor and the assumption that the listeners are all somehow in on it. I thought about the Imus comment too, then looked at how it was being handled in the media. None of the outrage addressed the core issue. It's not about some "nappy headed hoe" comment-of-the-day (there are so many variants of the hate game on air coming from all quarters all the time) - it's about an underlying attitude. The culture has become so brutal in many respects. Damage is what people have come to expect from this genre. They like to see people being trashed and ridiculed. The old car wreck analogy holds up well in respect to this increasing appetite for damage. None of it appeals to me because it's cheap shot as editorial comment basically. The motive is less about anything that really matters, than who can we fuck over today, then tack on some justification so it holds up as topical or newsworthy. At root it's schoolyard BS writ large.
