A trip down the rabbit hole

I've noticed a flurry of comments about Rush Limbaugh nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. I thought it was a joke, so I did not follow up. Imagine my horror when I read the following on James Dobson's Citizenlink (yes - I read it every day - it is the best way to keep track of the bastard.)

Limbaugh Nominated for Peace Prize

Earlier this week, former Vice President Al Gore was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Now Rush Limbaugh is up for the honor.

A popular conservative talk show host, Limbaugh is the choice of Landmark Legal Foundation, which announced its nomination Thursday.

"Rush Limbaugh is the foremost advocate for freedom and democracy in the world," according to Landmark Legal President Mark Levin.

"Every day he gives voice to values of democratic governance, individual opportunity and the just, equal application of the rule of law," Levin said. "It is fitting that the Nobel Committee recognize the power of these ideals to build a truly peaceful world for future generations."

Should the Nobel Committee pick Limbauigh for the honor, he'd win a cool $10 million in Norwegian kroner.

Should Limbaugh win the honor? Christ, I'll run naked down Wall Street if this were to happen. This is ludicrous. That fact that it was publicized by James Dobson sickens me, but is in character for the totally out of touch wanna be pastor.

I dug (well digged actually) deeper and found this excellent post on the subject by Mel Seesholtz, Ph.D. at the Atlantic Free Press.

That’s right. The Landmark Legal Foundation, “the premiere public interest law firm fighting for conservative principles in America,” has nominated the rotund one (who serves as an unpaid member of Landmark’s Board of Advisors) for the Nobel Peace Prize. [Seesholtz follows with a reprint of the nomination letter]

The post goes to shred Limbaugh, as well it should. But please people - tell me this was a joke?

Fortunately, there is a qualifying process for the people allowed to submit nominations. The list of qualifications is at

We can only hope that this nomination is invalid. This kind of thing just makes America appear even more like a nation of idiots and fanatics that is already apparent.

The following from Wikipedia puts such nominations into perspective:

"Nominations for the Prize may be made by a broad array of qualified individuals, including former recipients, members of national assemblies and congresses, university professors, international judges, and special advisors to the Prize Committee. In some years as many as 199 nominations have been received. The Committee keeps the nominations secret and asks that nominators do the same. Over time many individuals have become known as "Nobel Peace Prize Nominees", but this designation has no official standing [2]. Nominations from 1901 to 1951, however, have been released in a database. When the past nominations were released it was discovered that Adolf Hitler was nominated in 1939, though the nomination was retracted in February of the same year. Other infamous nominees included Joseph Stalin and Benito Mussolini."

Yep, not only were they supposed to keep the nomination secret (if it's even a valid nomination) but they've just extended the list of nomination atrocities.
