All I want for Christmas is a Leica M8

I learned to shoot on a Leica. At first I thought it crude. It had a rangefinder like the cheap Kodak cameras my mom used and was pretty beat up. I had trouble making pictures. I say "making" on purpose. You don't take a picture with a Leica, you make it. Leica's are manual. the Photographer sets the shutter speed, and the aperture. As I learned, the real work comes when you compose the image. At first I produced crap. I slowly improved my craft through constant shooting and darkroom work. Finally, after months of practice, I could make a picture. The results hooked me on photography for life. Nothing I have used since has ever come close, not even my trusted Nikon.

The dream of many Leica photographers has come true: the Leica M system is now open for professional digital photography. Breaking completely new ground, the LEICA M8 doesn't only look like an M - it utilizes all the benefits of the analog Leica M system for sophisticated and creative digital photography. It is the only digital camera for professionals to incorporate the rangefinder system with its advantages of discreet and quiet operation, speed and precision.

The only thing they forgot to mention is the price. At nearly $5k, I might not find one in my stocking this year.

Digital Camera Info has a video that shows of its features here.

Never be surprised at one can find in the proverbial "stocking". I recently made a joke post about wanting a camera, and someone offered, I said why not, and it's en route to my post box now. ;)

Based on the megapixel myth, I'd hold out until the 24 megapixel version.

But what a beautiful camera.

Tim - I won't give up hope then. I could have fun with a Leica.

M8 is a joke for its price. Check any major camera forums like dpreview.com before you buy it.

Anonymous - duh!

I would pay maybe $2 for it tops.
