The silly notion that god does stuff for us

I read and despair… I know lots of people who think like this.

“Even if I’m going to drop my kids off, or I need to park somewhere, I’m like, ‘OK God, you know I’m in this parking lot, you know any place you can open up for me would be great!’ I just have this relationship- I’m not dumbing down prayer. What I’m doing- it’s just part of my life.”

Victoria Osteen

The Christian notion that god listens to our silly prayers and then intervenes in the lives of people to make our desires come true makes no sense at all when one considers the concept of free will. Why do people think this way? In Victoria Osteen’s scenario, god would stop running the universe to make Mr. Nobody stop his shopping and open a place close to mall for the princess of Christian bullshit to park. I mean, wtf?

It's terribly exasperating. My cousin's wife, an otherwise nice lady, is one of those fundie christians. I was thinking about friending her on facebook as I'm trying to get back in touch with various family members, but a quick glance through her posts put me right off.

She posted the following: They were down at the beach when someone nicked their bag with a cellphone and tablet in it. She was all "I prayed to god to get it back, next thing two lifeguards had chased down the guy and found our stuff. God is great etc etc...". (Not word one of thanks to the two lifeguards btw).

I love how god cares so much about your personal stuff, but doesn't give a rat's ass about grinding poverty, starvation, thousands dying from ebola, savage gang rapes etc etc etc etc etc...

Makes me sick to my stomach.

The Prayer Paradox always applies:

1. If your prayer is in accordance with God's Plan, then it will happen whether you pray it or not.

2. If your prayer is NOT in accordance with God's Plan, then it won't happen no matter how often you pray it.

Thus, prayer is irrelevant.

God's plan... there is no plan. I never get why people pray.
The #1 reason I used to pray came down to fear. I was afraid of what might happen if I didn't. Silly, irrational, and embarrassing to admit. I'm glad I got over it.
I used to pray because my dad would beat my ass if I did not.
Yeah, that would have done the trick too.
