Thoughts on prayer

I don't have any... It's useless.

The Friendly Atheist does though: This is How You Pray Harder, While Accomplishing Nothing

My favorite, "Pick a small but regular sacrifice (no sugar in your coffee, no condiments, no added salt). Thank Jesus for his sacrifice every time you make yours." Seriously? Thank you Jesus for no sugar in my tea. What the hell does that accomplish?

Do something. Act. Give. Move a little dirt in the garden of your life.

Yeah, that was a good one. The idea that their god really cares about token gestures like this is quite revealing.
Once I deconverted I realized that prayer was more a method for thinking through situations, and a coping mechanism in times of strife. Even when I believed I knew that prayer was no guarantee that what I was praying for would come true, and I seldom prayed for things, but more for guidance, which usually came because I was thinking through whatever situation I was in.
I have enjoyed some of your writing, but I actually find you do have thoughts on prayer; enough to post about it. Just one question: Why is someone so bright and talented, such a cynic? All the time you spend on this fixation with bad examples of Christians could be so much better spent. As you rightly say: Do something. Act. Give. Move a little dirt in the garden of your life. Even one so learned as you must admit that for all your examples of evil clergy, there are huge numbers who live a good life and fight the good fight.
Why are you so bitter? Just wondering.
