David Thompson was found guilty on 22 counts of falsifying financial records and filing fraudulent tax returns. Thompson stole a lot of money from his church.
The courtroom was crowded with about three-dozen spectators, including many current and former members of the East Side church that lost as much as $1 million through Thompson’s actions.
“The biggest casualty was not financial,” the current pastor, Doug Girton, said outside the courtroom. “A lot of people lost faith.”
The congregation continues to pray for Thompson and his family, Girton said, “but the truth needed to be dealt with.”
Thompson lived like a king because he had direct access to church funds with no oversight. I think his church has fixed that loophole now. Thompson faces up to 90 years in prison.
