Photo a day – street food

DSC_8050

Since my dad died, my wife and I started taking my mom out for dinner once a week. It is interesting to see her try new things and experience some of the pleasure of life from my perspective. We took her out to K’ya for a run at their street food menu. The restaurant is located in the lobby area of the Hotel Ménage. It’s worth a visit. The food is tasty.

I shot with a 50mm with a shallow depth of field. I was trying to control my focal point and produce something in focus near the middle of the shot. I did not quite pull it off. I’ll do better next time.

my trick with shallow depth of field is to use the rule of thirds to make sure that the spot that's in focus is in the 1/3 position, both horizontally and vertically. when i do food, it's mostly on the bottom third, right or left. that helps you get a really good, sharp look at the food itself, and then blur off to show that there's much more where that came from!

of course, sometimes i love breaking those composition rules too!

I tried the rule of thirds today, my results were poor. I need more practice. Thanks for the tip.
