Fr Eugene Lewis jailed for sexual abuse

Another pedopastor is heading to prison. Fr Eugene Lewis, a 78-year-old Catholic priest, is heading to prison for indecently assaulting  three sisters in the 60s and 70s. His abuse was based on power, authority, and silence.

The court heard the girls’ parents welcomed the visits, not only by Lewis but by the other White Fathers and students. They felt they would be beneficial for the children because of their experiences in life, in travelling the world and their Catholic ethos.

The court was told that Lewis in particular would spend time with the girls, telling them stories. The sisters did not tell each other or anyone else of the offences at the time.

They told the court they did not feel able to do so as the White Fathers were, to an extent, revered by their parents.

Lewis plans to appeal. I hope they keep in jail until the appeals are heard.

Did you know him?????............. I did personally and for a very long time, I do not believe a word of this, the reason one of these women went back to visit fr eugene in later years was because she was having an affair with a married police man,,,,, not the best of things for a catolic woman to be doing back then!! ........... I believe these women are seeking money, always two sides eh ........ except when there are these accusations,,,,, disgrace!!

I agree with Belfast woman 28. This is a total miscarriage of justice. None of the evidence given by this woman rings true.... and I say that as someone who was sexually abused as a child and as a teenager. I attended this trial and listened to the evidence and, to be honest, was completely horrified by the jury's verdict. Is this what it has come to, that a jury will believe just about anything of a Catholic priest without any corroborating evidence? This verdict is not just a travesty of justice for Eugene Lewis, it is a calculated insult to those who have been genuinely abused.
