Nutball Alert: Michael Stopa

I read an article by Jim Hand of the Sun Chronicle called, It's a matter of faith. In it are the astoundingly ignorant words of Republican political candidate Michael Stopa.

Michael Stopa, another Republican running in the 3rd district that includes Attleboro, North Attleboro, Plainville, Wrentham, Seekonk and Rehoboth, said he is convinced Obama is an atheist.

"I actually don't think Barack Obama is a Muslim. I think he is a nonbeliever," he said.

Stopa, a Harvard University physicist, said he has no proof for his claim, but says Obama has the radical anti-American views of an atheist.

"I have no specific evidence, but I think he's sympathetic to anybody who is opposed to America and American values," Stopa said.

Wait, wait, the “radical Anti-American views of an Atheist?” Folks, I think I’ve found another nutball.

Logic is fun. Stopa goes with the false assumption that all Atheists are radical and Anti-American, then links some of Obama’s behavior to these same radical views, and all of a sudden Obama is an Atheist. Stopa has a PhD from Harvard, but he’s still a nutball.

In the same article Republican political candidate Earl Henry Sholley goes with similar faulty logic. He thinks, "I believe in his heart of hearts he is a true Marxist, and Marxists are atheists…”

News flash Sholley – Marxism is a political philosophy, not a religious philosophy. Not all Marxists are atheists, nor are all atheists Marxists, and Obama is not a Marxist, he a friggen democrat.

Go ahead world, laugh. We have it coming.

When did name calling become normal political action? I sometimes wish the other side would start calling republicans what they really are but figure they won't because then they will have to admit they aren't much different.
Not only is Stopa a Harvard Ph.D, he's a physicist!! How on earth can a physicist think that atheism is un-American??

...and thus a nutball.
Atheism is un-American. This country was founded on GOD. This country started going down hill once GOD was being taken away from EVERYTHING

fundies are so cute, and so wrong.

Provide this proof that this country was founded on your god. Your proof must show that they were talking about your god not some other christian god and it needs to be in the document that founded the government and what the rules are based on it.
I've heard Mr Stopa respond to the criticism on several occasions. He has actually responded to message board postings directly and I wish I could remember where I found his response last time to quote him exactly. In any case, I'll paraphrase his response - He did make the two statements in question. However connecting the two statements (i.e. all atheists are un-American) was a reach made by the author, not his personal view. He has denounced prejudice against Atheists and stated explicitly that he does not believe all atheists are un-American. If you are going to attack Mr Stopa, I would recommend you perform more rigorous research rather than slapping a label on him based on some out of context comments.

Right... the same rigorous research that lets you pull something out of the air to use as evidence? No thanks.
