Now what Gwen, start over?

I read stories of clergy sexual abuse and I'm struck time and again by the stupidity of those involved. The youth pastor throws away a life developed over years of patient study and service. All for what? A little sex? I never understand it. Gwen Hablin, the ex-youth pastor at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church in Liberty Township, threw her life away when she admitted to sex with a 17-year-old boy while on a church sponsored youth trip to Australia two years ago. Let's look at the life she threw away.

  • 9 years of service to St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church
  • A Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication
  • Her master level studies in Counseling, Communication, and Ministry.
  • Her self respect and honor.

I see from her Linkedin profile that she specialized in oral communication. That figures. She's looking for work now, I'm sure the Baptists are hiring.

This is an odd case. The crime happened in Australia. I would think that local authorities would be unable to prosecute and I doubt Hamblin would return to Australia for a trial unless compelled. I'll have to follow this case to see what happens. I'm not up on child sex abuse laws in Australia. Does anyone know what the penalties are? I'm behind the Great Firewall of China for another day, so I'm not able to use my normal resources.

Look at how many politicians used to throw away their careers for a little sex. Now that the GOP has decided they're okay with keeping the likes of Vitter and Ensign, maybe that will change. I guess my point is that a lot of people seem to do really stupid and potentially career-ending things for a little sex.

I really don't get it. Sex is great, but would I risk anything of long term value for it? no, not ever.
Fo sho it's just sex and with a teenager at that. At 17 the kids love making skills probably resemble God-that means non existent.

Hmm. UK age of consent is 16. Interesting case. (I know it didn't happen in the UK, I'm just highlighting that if it did, the charges (if any) would be very different).

Either way I'd never really consider sex with a 17 year old "sex with a minor". Maybe abuse of power depending on what professional relationship she was supposed to have with him, though.

I tend to agree. I'd go with abuse of power and ewwww.
She was never prosecuted. Got off scot free. And she still has full custody of her kids. Sickening.
I noticed she isn't included in your list of clergy and associates accused of misdeeds. You might want to add her.
Apparently she has a new job working for this dental office. I don't even have words.

She got off "scott Free" because the kid made it up. He admitted this months later. That! is sickening. Now blogs like this further scar a an innocent persons reputation. This should be removed.

If she's innocent - why doesn't list her Youth Pastor job on LinkedIn....
