The Derwin Pasley story

DerwinPasley Derwin Pasley is a football coach in a youth league in Olympia, Washington. He was arrested Monday night on one count of child molestation, attempted rape, and unlawful Imprisonment. He allegedly tried to rape a 14-year-0ld boy.

Investigators said Pasley stopped his car in the Olympia apartment complex where the player lives and then allegedly fondled the player.

Detectives said the coach then exposed his own genitals, locked the car doors and tried to force the boy to perform a sex act.

Pasley is not the type of person I track. In his role as a football coach he has no overt ties to religion, so I would not normally write about him. However, the Pasley case illustrates one of the reasons why I post on clergy sexual abuse. My posts create a searchable record. In the near future, if you type Derwin Pasley in Google, eventually a link to this post will appear in the result. If you want to know something about his background that does not appear in a criminal background check, this post will always be there. It is for this reason that I never remove a post. If Pasley is found innocent and I hear about it, I will update the post. But the post stay up, guilty or innocent.

Why? Well for starters Derwin Pasley was accused of child molestation while working as a youth pastor in Florida. He would have been 17 at the time.

According to court records, Pasley was arrested on suspicion of a felony sex offense against a child in Miami-Dade County, Fla., in 1994. He subsequently was acquitted of the two counts of sexual battery of a minor, Olympia Police Cmdr. Tor Bjornstad said.

I would have noticed. I would have posted. And perhaps Pasley would not have been able to find a job around kids.

He’s had other problems too.

In 2002, the Olympia Police Department conducted a criminal investigation into whether Pasley committed a sex offense against a child, but the Thurston County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office decided not to file charges based on a lack of evidence, Bjornstad said.

My guess is Pasley is headed to prison for a long time. When he gets out, Google will still show this article.

Derwin Pasely was credentialed as a pastor by the Assemblies of God of the Northwest in 2008 (see page 8). So I guess he qualifies after all… I wonder what he will tell his wife and children about his latest arrest? I wonder how long it will take until another child comes forward? Oh wait, that happened a few minutes ago.

The charge involves a 13-year-old he allegedly molested and is separate from an alleged incident involving a 14-year-old boy. In that case, he was arrested on suspicion of attempted third-degree child rape, third-degree child molestation and unlawful imprisonment with sexual motivation.

Things are not looking too good for Dewrin Pasley.

You are right. Things are not looking good for him. But why post a picture of his family including kids. Aren't they going through enough? They didn't commit the crimes.

The news left out a few facts. I'm filling in the blanks. The picture
of his family is small so that the kids can not be identified. It
gives you the impression of a family without dragging them into the
spotlight.

If you just look on his MySpace page, you'll see the same picture and a few others...including several teenage boys on his list of friends. Seems pretty public to me anyway. Privacy is a thing of the past....unfortunately. And when the violated are questioned on the stand in court if there is a trial...that pretty much nixes out their privacy and their families privacy. There is only one person to blame for the pain and embarassment that any families involved may have. That's the person who made the choice to commit the crime.
"including several teenage boys". Did you ever stop to think the guy has a family and those are possibly his family members. Don't judge what you do not know.
I agree, you should present the information that has been found to be true and correct up to this point. Howver, to put the family picture in your blog is unconscionable. Very irresponsible of you.

Sorry - I do not agree.
I'm new to this blog. I am not a fan of sex offenders, I am not religious and I believe in the justice system. But his family is not on trial, Mr Pasley is. I agree the picture of his family is tacky and spiteful and frankly needs to be taken off of the website. Come on, if you are worried about the interest of innocent children, why are his children an exclusion.

Fair enough. That's the 10th complaint in two days. It's gone.
Thank you Mojoey. I can say that you are a fair man and have a inner sense of what is right . The right thing to do was take down the picture of the family and let the judicial system work its course in this case. It is my sincere hope that the innocent parties attached to this case are not free from further humiliation, especially the children.
i am a believer in the fact that in order for someone to be healed and restored and even have a chance at changing, they things in which they have Chosen to take part in, need to be exposed. i wish they best for him and his family, and same with his Twin brother Darwin
Whats sad about this is I personally knew the family. They are my neighbors, right across the street. I have known them for seven years. I am friends with their daughter and have gone over to the house countless times. Derwin always seemed like a great father to his kids and a great husband. When I heard about the accusations I was outraged. And since he was not charged successfully in the past we were not notified that a possible child molestor was living in such a close proximity. Also, the way we heard was not the best. A news reporter had come to our door and told us. We were shocked, and my parents and I would not comment. But, I do believe Derwin, though a great father he may be, is guilty. I know he is already in jail, but my friend (his daughter) doesn't want to believe it. I just wanted to comment on this because the possibilities of what could have happened are endless.
This is just so sad and shocking. I used to work with Derwin. He seemed like such a great person with a wonderful family. Just so hard to believe this. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who was/is involved with this. Just so heartbreaking.

Pasley pleaded guilty in a plea bargain in exchange for 12 1/2 years in prison. Off the streets for a while, but watch for him, he'll be back.
