A failure to report

I don't normally report on this kind of thing, but the pastor involved is a jerk. Baptist pastor Aaron Rodgerson, who is also a city councilman, was indicted on two counts, misdemeanor failing to report an abused or neglected child, and misdemeanor unauthorized practice of law. Rodgerson is pastor of the South Side Baptist Church in Kirksville MO.

“The allegations in that case are that the child at 10 months old only weighed 12 pounds, and City Councilman Rodgerson was giving some advice to these people regarding contact with the Kirksville Police Department and the family services,” Williams said.

What I find interesting is that they don’t report on why he was arrested under the failure to report charge which is a much more significant charge than the unauthorized practice of law. As a pastor, he is obligated to report child abuse, even suspected child abuse. He is charged with not reporting a suspected case of child abuse from a member of his own church and then giving legal advice that could be viewed as benefiting his own case. In this instance, advising the accused to not co-operate with authorities. The second charge seems pretty flimsy to me. That’s advice I (or any reasonable person) would give to most people dealing with a law enforcement agency.

The Mom of Many blog tells the story of baby Alethia, who is the subject of the child abuse charge mentioned above. Alethia’s father, Nathaniel Burns is the associate pastor at Rodgerson’s church. Nathaniel along with his wife Elisabeth are charged with endangering the welfare of their child. Alethia was pronounced as failing to thrive by medical professionals.  Failure to thrive is a serious medical diagnoses:

Most diagnoses of failure to thrive are made in infants and toddlers in the first few years of life — a crucial period of physical and mental development. After birth, a child's brain grows as much in the first year as it will grow during the rest of life. Poor nutrition during this period can have permanent negative effects on mental development.

Yet if you read Mom of Many, she claims a medical conspiracy is  hiding the true condition of the child.

All the tests showed that she was a normal baby who just happened to be small. They would not accept that and so were forcibly tube feeding Alethia to make her gain weight. She actually LOST weight while in the hospital–the poor baby was only allowed to be with her parents for 1 hour a day and ONLY if a social worker was present. They were giving her so much that she stopped eating completely.

Not normal, not small, not healthily, the term is a failure to thrive and it means trouble for the poor child. This is where I disconnect and start thinking I’ve found another group of nutballs. What finally convinced me was something else I found in reading about this weird case. Pastor Rodgerson is a fundie homophobe.

In a controversial vote on Monday, Kirksville City Councilman and Pastor of Southside Baptist Church Aaron Rodgerson voted against the inclusion of sexual orientation to the Kirksville Fair Housing Policy. When questioned if he would rent to someone he knew was gay, Mr. Rodgerson simply answered, “no”.

I watched his interview with a local reporter. When finished I reminded myself that this man, and many more like him, is the reason I blog about Christian nutballs. I am more inclined to question his character and judgment now that I’ve see where he stands on social issues.

I love this line from the Mom of Many blog.

They have been persecuted a lot for their faith (threatening emails, angry letters…..) America was founded on Christian principles but we are no longer a Christian nation.

Do you want to see hate mail? I mean seriously, you live in bible fundie land. I get the stuff every week, from Christians no less. Cry me a  friggen persecuted river.

Amazing that this has garnered national and international attention. That's the 21st century for us, right? Fifty years ago few outside this area of Missouri would have heard of the case or had an opinion. I'm a Christian, and am embarrassed that people like the pastor give all Christians a bad name--just as terrorists who act in the name of Islam give all Muslims a bad name. If we substituted the words "social organization" or "restricted club" -- or even "atheist" -- for the words "Christian" and "Baptist," and reported the events, the whole situation would still be deplorable. The parents and the pastor would still have violated the law -- and common sense. Regardless of any reason for "failure to thrive" (such as congenital defect, unknown disease for example) there should be medical intervention early on. The parents should have wanted to know what was causing such failure to thrive, especially if they *thought* they were doing the right things for the child. This is clearly child neglect--whether out of ignorance or any other reason.
Just because you read it in the paper does not make it true... There is NO failure to thrive. Three doctors and numerous nurses will attest to this FACT. The child in question is healthy, alert, curious and developmentally on track for her age. The age and weight as given to the grand jury were INCORRECT.
Did you know that the child in question was seen several times a week by a RN and several other mandatory reporters?
I have held this child in my arms, we have played, I have feed her. There is NOTHING wrong with this child.

Granny Nerd, what do you have against this Pastor? How can you call yourself Christian? "The greatest of these is love", "no greater love has any man than he who lays down his life for his friends", "they will know we are Christians by our love".

Mojoey, have you spoken with the parents or other family members? As one who is quick to question tradition, the norm or "traditional fundamentalists", why do you blindly follow what the "authorities" or the media tells you? Do you not know how to seek the Truth?

The Truth shall set you free...

C. Sister - just because I read it in the paper means something happened. I ask myself what is reasonable. Is a 12 pound 9 month old baby reasonable? No. I would like to see reports from the three doctors, But the press only listed actual doctor reports that referenced a 10 pound baby that reached 12 pounds after treatment. There is amble evidence to charge the parents with a felony. I hope they learn something in prison. I really do.

Doctors don't make stuff up. Sorry crazy lady. In your world that might be what you need to tell yourself. But in the real world rational people read fact checked news and say, "what the hell?"

And quit picking on Granny Nerd. She believes the way she believes. It is not any more valid or authentically Christians than your perverted version of Christianity. the only difference is that you Granny Nerd is reasonable.

And finally, I shed the light on nutballs. That is what I do. How does it feel?
First of all, I did not write the article, I only reprinted a prayer request by a fellow Christian, which is my reasonable right - we do live in America, don't we? Or has America changed its stand on religious freedom? Second of all, if Granny Nerd can express her opinion and receive your protection, then why can't C. Sister be free to express hers with your protection as well? Don't we live in America where we have freedom of expression? ____I know a child with the same size/weight issue. She is from a small sized family and is small to this day as are her brothers. It is not a crime to have a child of small stature. If they are, then we'd better see the parents of overweight children charged for abuse or neglect. Obesity carries a serious medical risk. ____How about charging families with latch key kids or kids who watch too much tv? That's detrimental to the emotional and mental welfare of a child. Is this the America we all want? No, if you are a parent, you want to know that you can parent the way you see fit. ____Too often the local authorities take it way too far and impede on parental rights - they too often unjustly accuse parents.

it's common for doctors to try and cover themselves by making a patient worse. Especially in Kirksville Missouri. Family Services, especially in Kirksville try to make themselves feel important the way they do this is to increase their caseloads to get more funding unfortunately by increasing your caseload a lot of cases that should never even be in the system are there and families destroyed. The most evil social worker in Kirksville history was Cathy Richmond-Rohn, one of her favorite tactics until I stopped it, was to find someone that she didn't think should have children and took their children away she would then offer to give the children back if the individual subjected themselves to a "voluntary" sterilization. When I uncovered this I went to the surgeon there is an named who was about to undergo the procedure under coercion and said if he proceeded to do this the very next day I would file a complaint in an attempt to get his license revoked, and he agreed he would not do the surgery and that he and his colleagues would take specific action to ensure that Family Services did not send any more unwilling participants for sterilization.
