Military burns unsolicited Bibles

American Military personnel burned bibles rather than pass them on to Afghans. I wonder if this would have happened under the Bush Presidency?

Such religious outreach can endanger American troops and civilians in the devoutly Muslim nation, Wright said. "The decision was made that it was a 'force protection' measure to throw them away, because, if they did get out, it could be perceived by Afghans that the U.S. government or the U.S. military was trying to convert Muslims," Wright told CNN on Tuesday.

Something tells me yes.

I love how so many things have already changed but fear they are only temporary. I agree I very much doubt they would have been handled this way. I wouldn't be surprised if the money for the bibles came from the faith based initiative program. I think I read somewhere that the bibles had been there for a good while. I would have read it at msnbc, cnn or usatoday. It could have also been on nobeliefs or alternet. I am to lazy to look right now.
As proselytising is a crime in Afghanistan burning them was the rational thing to do, then again perhaps they could have been recycled into toilet paper. That would have meant that somebody had finally found a responsible use for bibles. i somehow doubt there will ever be an enquiry to establish why they were there in the first place and who paid for them.
