We call him the Millburn Bat Man

I had marked the story of bat wielding pastor Darryl L. George for submission to Hypocrisy Watch. I guess I forgot. He’s in the news again…

Back on January 9th, Pastor George and his 19 year old son are alleged to have arrived at Milburn High School with a baseball bat looking to confront students who had been harassing George’s 15-year-old son. During the confrontation, a student good Samaritan was beaten with the aluminum bat, ending up in the hospital. Pastor George and his son were subsequently arrested on assault charges. They claimed that they were protecting the 15-year-old from a gang of white students bent on racial violence. They also claim they were at the school to attend wrestling practice. They did not have an explanation for the bat.

And the lawyer man says…

"The George family is a solid family," Tillard said. He added the minister’s two sons were exemplary students who have endured prejudice in the school district.

Did I mention the Millburn Bat Man is a pastor? I wonder if he understands that escalation is rarely an effective means to confront racism. People get hurt. Is violence a Christian concept? I’m mean, beating the hell out of people with a baseball bat instead of addressing the situation with the school’s administration seems barbaric instead of an example of Christian love? Another alternative would be to flee, just run away. Address the slight another day and another way. I can think of a few other ways to deal with the situation, a press conference, a protest, a town hall meeting, or a  a school board meeting. But a baseball bat? What the hell? Where did George learn to be a pastor, via the US Mail?
