US mayor converts to Islam

I hate to be snarky - but why is this news?

MACON, Georgia: Macon Mayor Jack Ellis has converted to Islam and is now working to legally change his name to Hakim Mansour Ellis.

Ellis, who was raised Christian, said Thursday that he became a Sunni Muslim during a December ceremony in the west African nation of Senegal.

People switch teams all the time. This is not newsworthy. Now, if Ellis had come out as an atheist... Nah, It will never happen.

And now for my real snarky side:

Darrell Pursiful of Dr. Platypus asks an interesting question.

With all due respect, for this line of reasoning to hold water, I have to believe that Mayor Ellis doesn’t take either his former or his current faith seriously enough. Simply put, if you don’t believe that at some level one is indeed better than the other, why change?

How does - because becoming a Muslim is all the rage these days and it gets international media attention? Ellis is in politics, right?

I've got to admit, I never thought of that angle. I'm so naïve! :-)
