Digging in the Romney dirt

Mormon presidential candidate Mitt Romney has polygamists in his family tree.

While Mitt Romney condemns polygamy and its prior practice by his Mormon church, the Republican presidential candidate's great- grandfather had five wives and at least one of his great-great grandfathers had 12...

...Other Mormons have run for the White House, including Romney's father in 1968 and Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, in 2000. But Mitt Romney's stature as a leading 2008 contender has renewed questions about his faith and its doctrines.

Romney no longer supports polygamy, nor does the Mormon church. Of course, the Mormons changed their position on polygamy after the United States made it illegal. With Romney as president, he could work to change the law. I hope not. I don't think I can handle more than one wife.

It is not uncommon for generational Mormons to have polygamists in the family. It just shows what a big shot mormon he is. I personally would never vote for someone like that, because i don't think a staunch Mormans could truely seperate church & State.

In the article it points out that the Mormon Church stopped practicing polygamy when it became illegal. I also referenced their website which has an article of faith written by Joseph Smith that states "We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law." It sounds like to me the mormans believe in a seperating of church and state. I would like to see more articles comparing the candidates education, experience, personal character then this sort of sensationalism. I would think we're past this type of prejudice. I have no problem voting for a catholic, protastant, jew or even mormon.

It says something about the personal integrity of Governor Romney that his detractors have to scour back 3 generations to literally dig up a skeleton in a closet... since his closet is pretty darn clean.

Justin,

Of the candidate, Romney comes off as being clean in my book. I try to judge a man by what he does, not his grandparents. If I were judged by the sins of my ancestors, I would be in Jail. It does not seem fair.

L>T - I've known a few of the Mormon elite in my day. I have quite a few friends in Utah. I would have to disagree on your point. Most have no problem keep religion and public sector life separate. Mormons are not at all like Evangelicals in that sense.

tk - that's why they call it digging up dirt. It is disgusting and is my main point. I keep asking, why is all this religious stuff so damn important? It is the character of the man or woman that matters the most. I don't expect to see much of this, because people are so focused on "what" is believed.

It didn't bother me reading about Romney's family history of polygamy. I mean, we all have hidden things hanging in our closets. I simply dislike ALL of his policies and what he represents politically.

However, since everything is fair game in American politics, I simply would like to know how many DEAD people he baptized and converted to the Mormon faith.

For those of you who do not know, conversion of DEAD people (people who when they died, were not Mormon) is an extremely common practice among Mormons, and that is why Mormons have, over the years, worked so diligently on genealogy. Their goal is to ultimately convert the whole world to their faith.

Of course, I suppose they have no problem doing this, especially when working with DEAD people. Not that I would personally know, but it seems as if none of their converts would really be able to object...being DEAD and all. Indeed I guess the Mormons have finally solved the problem of the whole free-will thing. Wait until everyone DIES!

I suppose all this makes Romney an excellent candidate for the presidency of the United States. (Forget what his extended family did in terms of polygamy. This converting of the DEAD is more fascinating.) Look who the hell is in office right now. George didn't have a full deck of cards either and he supposedly chats with God every day.

I wonder if the conversion of DEAD people is simply a preparation for a mega-war in the after-life. Does anyone have any thoughts concerning this??

Additionally, if Romney were to get elected, he would be the FIRST individual to believe in a religion that is fundamentally NOT monolithic. Mormons believe in three god heads, unlike Christianity and Judaism--religions that have only one god. Now THAT would really be kewl!

It would be nice to completely dismiss religion altogether, but unfortunately its influence over politicians nowadays often times causes domestic and international problems. Radicalism manifests itself in religious notions of morality which translates into what is right (good) and what is wrong (bad ). The US has been oppressed by right wing Christianity under the Bush regime like never before. No, religion (and its practitioners) need (s) to be scrutinized under a microscope …otherwise Americans (and by extension the rest of the world) will once again be victimized it (them).
