Blogroll Update: Godless Kiwi

Our first Kiwi (at least I think so), Godless Kiwi, has joined the Atheist Blogroll. His post "God is a four letter word" is a great look at bleeping out the word "God" in movies.

A great story for the New Year. New Zealand's main airline, Air New Zealand, recently showed an in-flight version of The Queen, the film starring Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II, with all references to God bleeped out. Why?

American censors bleeping out "God"? Goddam, that's funny. Some poor uptight newbie schmuck using a filter rather than judging contextually. "Oh my God, he said GOD!"
Does anyone remember Burk Breathed's Bloom County take on "offensensitivity"?

It's a good thing the movie, The Queen, didn't include one of Her Majesty's recent Christmas broadcasts in which she said,

“For me the teachings of Christ and my own personal accountability before God provide a framework in which I try to lead my life. I, like so many of you, have drawn great comfort in difficult times from Christ's words and example. I believe that the Christian message, in the words of a familiar blessing, remains profoundly important to us all: "Go forth into the world in peace, be of good courage, hold fast that which is good, render to no man evil for evil, strengthen the faint-hearted, support the weak, help the afflicted, honour all men"… It is a simple message of compassion… and yet as powerful as ever today, two thousand years after Christ's birth.”

Don't you know that this offends Atheists and Muslims?! The ACLU might file a lawsuit! (Funny how ACLU's defense of "freedom of speech" doesn't apply to free expression of "offensive" religious beliefs).
