At least I think they are smoke stacks. They could be chillers. All I know is this a shot from the refinery that has not gone boom in at least the last 25 years.
I would have to agree with fistandantalus. I worked in a similar plant for a time and it had cooling towers or "stacks" that looked very much like the ones in your photo.
I'm somewhat confused, however. Are you surprised that the plant has gone "boom" or is the photo just a moment of curiosity?
I checked with the guys at work today, the towers are cooling towers.
Tim - I'm surprised that this is the only refinery of the five or so in the area that has not exploded. I drive by each day thinking, is today the day?
That's rather a bad track record for the plants in your area. You would think after the third one, they would stop and ponder, "Hmm . . . something isn't right here."
