Leakey fights for Science against evangelicals

The insidious reach of the evangelical dark ages know no bounds.

Famed paleoanthropologist Richard Leakey is giving no quarter to powerful evangelical church leaders who are pressing Kenya's national museum to relegate to a back room its world-famous collection of hominid fossils showing the evolution of humans' early ancestors.

Leakey called the churches' plans "the most outrageous comments I have ever heard."

As I read this article my jaw kept bouncing off the floor. Pentecostal church leaders want the most complete example of Homo erectus suppressed simple because it conflicts with their religious beliefs.

Leaders of Kenya's Pentecostal congregation, with six million adherents, want the human fossils de-emphasized.

"The Christian community here is very uncomfortable that Leakey and his group want their theories presented as fact," said Bishop Bonifes Adoyo, head of the largest Pentecostal church in Kenya, the Christ is the Answer Ministries.

in a way, this is almost stranger than fiction, but serves as a warning to be vigilant. The forces of the evangelical dark ages are always at work.

I blogged on this also, and was equally amazed that a religious denomination is able to exert such clout. Of course they have a membership of six million, so I would assume they have church members in high places who are "connected" and that's why the museum may be feeling the heat on this issue.
