Are we all nutballs?

...Loretta Nall, the Libertarian Party's write-in candidate for governor of Alabama, drew wide notice with her cleavage-based campaign.

But Nall conceded that her low-neckline, low-budget write-in campaign had no chance of topping Republican incumbent Bob Riley or the Democratic challenger, Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley.

But the 32-year-old blond from Alexander City, who called for legalizing marijuana, a pullout of Alabama National Guard troops from Iraq , remained upbeat and is talking about a run for Congress in 2008.

Source: Libertarian talks of '08 run

I read this and shook my head in shame. I am a Libertarian, and I have no hope of ever influencing politics because of people like Loretta Nall. The people I know in California libertarian circles are a strange bunch, social misfits, malcontents, and idealists mostly. Not a one knows how to run an effective political campaign, many would support Nall's efforts under the auspices of "getting the libertarian message out". Of course, the only message that gets out it that libertarians are nutballs.

Loretta Nall is a single issue Libertarian primarily interested in marijuana legalization. Her background story is interesting, and a telling reason as to why she would be attracted to Libertarian politics. Her candidacy was pointless, she generated a great deal of media attention, after all, sex sells. However, the party image suffered immeasurable damage - and she plans to run again.

Are we all crazy? The Alabama Libertarian Party put her for as their officially endorsed candidate. They did this on purpose. Granted, ending the war on drugs is a legitimate libertarian issue, but is it the only issue? How can this possibly help the party?

Note: I'm closing my California themed libertarian blog and moving related posting to Deep Thoughts.

Let the war on Christmas begin!

The war on Christmas is so.... stupid. But, I guess "the war" is on. It all seems so pointless, can't we just feed the homeless, spend time with our loved ones, and go to church, or not.

Dobson quits as Haggard counselor

I suspected that something like this would happen:

Citing a lack of time, Focus on the Family founder James C. Dobson withdrew from the team overseeing counseling for the Rev. Ted Haggard, the evangelical pastor embroiled in a scandal involving a male prostitute and illegal drugs.

Source: Dobson quits as Haggard counselor - Los Angeles Times

You see, Ted Haggard has admitted to a lifelong obsession with men. If Haggard has been struggling his whole life, the chances of Dobson being able to "heal" Haggard are pretty slim. Since Dobson believe Homosexuality can be "cured", the risk of failure is high. I think Dobson is backing away from Haggard because the risk of failure will expose Dobson's anti-gay agenda as a fraud.

last Jesus freak

Odd things happen. Take this blog for example, some intrepid web surfer hit the next blog button and ended up here - he came from the last Jesus freak.  I followed it back for a look. I found an interesting post on Jesus and his attitude toward homosexuals. It is definitely not your standard evangelical anti-gay  rhetoric - so I'm passing it on.

Well, it’s on. Here in South Carolina, all of these good upstanding Christians are going to the polls. Now it remains to see if they will, in fact, do what Jesus would do. I don’t hold out a lot of hope.

South Carolina is one of those states that are deciding if they want to write bigotry right into their state constitution. This seems to be a hot button issue here, despite what little evidence we have as to how Jesus felt about the issue.

Darth Santorum defeated

The powers of evil have been vanquished. Evangelical nutball & anti-science Senator Rick Santorum has lost his re-election bid. He is riding 38% of the vote on the long slide toward oblivion as I write this. An incumbent losing by 24 percentage points is a bad thing, right?

Nutball Alert: Liberal Stinkin thinkin

On my morning drive to work I listed to NRP speculate about if Bush tried to influence Tuesday's elections by pushing for a death sentence in the Saddam Hussein trial in advance of Tuesdays elections. I thought it odd that people would speculate that a long expected outcome would in some way have been manipulated by Bush. The people of the world have watched the slow steady cadence of a known process that could only result in a  a guilty verdict and death sentence. Yet, nutball liberals, who are in many cases are just as scary as the religious right, actually think Bush pulled the strings.  It's is crazy.

When all else fails... execute the dictator. It's that simple. When American troops are being killed by the dozen, when the country you are occupying is threatening to break up into smaller countries, when you have militias and death squads roaming the streets and you’ve put a group of Mullahs in power -- execute the dictator...

Once again… The timing of all of this is impeccable -- two days before congressional elections. And if you don’t see it, then I'm sorry, you're stupid. Let's see how many times Bush milks this as a "success" in his coming speeches.

Source: Ahead of Elections, Bush Plays Saddam Card - OhmyNews International

It scares me to think that people can be so blinded by their agendas. I was only a few weeks ago that I heard our own Vice Presentment Darth Cheney saying that the rise in Iraq violence was linked to a desire to unseat elected Republicans in the elections. It is all crazy, yet I know some impressionable people will believe it because it fits their world view.

Regarding the pending execution of Saddam - why must he be killed? How about mercy and a dank lonely prison cell for the rest of his life instead?  We've killed too many people in the name of peace and security, it is time to stop killing people. I agree with Tony Blair - no hangings please. Of course, I'll will watch the live feed.

Pastor Ted Haggard liked to "stake out" gay bars

Because, you know, that way he could bring them back to church and um... save them.

He was always on the lookout for spies. At the time, Colorado Springs was a small city split between the Air Force and the New Age, and the latter, Pastor Ted believed, worked for the devil. Pastor Ted soon began upsetting the devil's plans. He staked out gay bars, inviting men to come to his church...

Source: Soldiers of Christ (Harpers.org)

Harpers ran a story on Haggard and his flock of sheeple a year ago. It seems funny that Pastor Ted's emphasis on saving gays from themselves, was just a cover to have a little fun on the side. How long was this man leading his flock of sheeple astray?

How thick were Haggard's web of lies? From the very beginning of his ministry his proclivities were in evidence. Yet, as with most hypocrites, the person Haggard wanted to be was hidden behind a mask of contempt. Yet he led men and had access to the President, he influenced policy. How many of the state led fights to repeal or limit gay marriage rights were hatched by this man and his cronies? And now we are supposed to have pity? Forgiveness? Compassion? Oh hell no.

A Dissent: The Case Against Faith

Sam Harris has a new essay in Newsweek:

...more than half the American population believes that the entire cosmos was created 6,000 years ago. This is, incidentally, about a thousand years after the Sumerians invented glue. Those with the power to elect presidents and congressmen—and many who themselves get elected—believe that dinosaurs lived two by two upon Noah's Ark, that light from distant galaxies was created en route to the Earth and that the first members of our species were fashioned out of dirt and divine breath, in a garden with a talking snake, by the hand of an invisible God.

The forces of evil

I've been saving this one. James Dobson's response to the initial news of ex-Pastor Ted Haggard's fall from grace was to blame the forces of evil who were hell bent on disrupting the election. It is all about the votes baby, all about the votes.

It is unconscionable that the legitimate news media would report a rumor like this based on nothing but one man’s accusation. Ted Haggard is a friend of mine and it appears someone is trying to damage his reputation as a way of influencing the outcome of Tuesday’s election — especially the vote on Colorado’s marriage-protection amendment — which Ted strongly supports.

“He has shown a great deal of grace under these unfortunate circumstances, quickly turning this matter over to his church for an independent investigation. That is a testament to the character I have seen him exhibit over and over again through the years.”

Source: Dvorak Uncensored » Lest We Forget… James Dobson’s Attack on the Media for Even Reporting the Ted Haggard Story

Is it really unconscionable that legitimate news media would report hypocrisy? Especially given James Haggard's access to the president, his stance on gay rights, and his dominionist political agenda. Exposing scandals and hypocrisy is exactly what the press is needed for. The power of the press helps keep the politicos in power honest. Exposing Haggard, and the many other powerful political elites who have been running amok, is the value of the press.

Dobson is a political hack, interested only in pushing his agenda of hate. It give me great hope to see him and the others of his ilk fumble the end game. I have hope...

Dobson's relevance is waning

Two days until the election and Dobson is failing to an impact. I have some reason to hope. Perhaps Dobson agenda of hate is drawing to a close.

James Dobson showed to a crowd of a few hundred, in the venue that holds 2500. Dobson filled stadiums back in 2004 when he was stumping for Thune and brought his hate-fest message to town. Dobson's relevance is waning and the recent scandal surrounding his partner in the "values" crusade Ted Haggard really makes Dobson look like a total idiot. While the head of the Evangelical churches and partner in crime for Dobson has been exposed in the last week for his three year involvement with a gay prostitute, Dobson tried to again pass off his "hate gay people" marriage garbage.

The Ted Haggard apology

The statement below was released by New Life Church. It is the text of a letter from Ted Haggard read during church services today. It is notable for a couple of reasons.

  • He asks for money - its stunning. He admits to being a complete and total idiot, but asks for the sheeple to continue giving.
  • He does not admit to being gay - He does not even admit to homosexual behavior, he just eludes to it.
  • He does not admit to drug use - This I don't get. Drug use, meth in particular, needs appropriate medical attention and counseling. If you cannot even admit it. The problem is unlikely to go away.
  • He believes he can be healed - Unfortunately, he is blinded by his own faith here. Just call a spade a spade Haggard.
He is going to James Dobson to cure his homosexual desires. Give me a revolver, fill five of six chambers with ammo, spin chamber, any place the gun in my hand. I would gladly put the gun to my head and pull the trigger before I submit to James Dobson on anything.
  • He is guilty of sexual immorality - I'm not sure what sexual immorality is; it must be a fundie buzz word. However, since the only things he did that was immoral, is cheat on his wife, use addictive drugs, and lie through his meth stained teeth, I would have preferred a more succinct expression of guilt. Like an admission of adultery, drug addition, and the struggle with his own sexuality, not to mention the obvious chronic lying, hypocrisy, and deceit.

My Dear New Life Church Family,

I am so sorry. I am sorry for the disappointment, the betrayal, and the hurt. I am sorry for the horrible example I have set for you.

I have an overwhelming, all-consuming sadness in my heart for the pain that you and Iand my family have experienced over the past few days. I am so sorry for the circumstances that have caused shame and embarrassment to all of you.

I asked that this note be read to you this morning so I could clarify my heart's condition to you. The last four days have been so difficult for me, my family and all of you, and I have further confused the situation with some of the things I've said during interviews with reporters who would catch me coming or going from my home. But I alone am responsible for the confusion caused by my inconsistent statements. The fact is, I am guilty of sexual immorality, and I take responsibility for the entire problem.

I am a deceiver and a liar. There is a part of my life that is so repulsive and dark that I’ve been warring against it all of my adult life. For extended periods of time, I would enjoy victory and rejoice in freedom. Then, from time to time, the dirt that I thought was gone would resurface, and I would find myself thinking thoughts and experiencing desires that were contrary to everything I believe and teach.

Through the years, I’ve sought assistance in a variety of ways, with none of them proving to be effective in me. Then, because of pride, I began deceiving those I love the most because I didn’t want to hurt or disappoint them.

The public person I was wasn’t a lie; it was just incomplete. When I stopped communicating about my problems, the darkness increased and finally dominated me. As a result, I did things that were contrary to everything I believe.

The accusations that have been leveled against me are not all true, but enough of them are true that I have been appropriately and lovingly removed from ministry. Our church's overseers have required me to submit to the oversight of Dr. James Dobson, Pastor Jack Hayford, and Pastor Tommy Barnett. Those men will perform a thorough analysis of my mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical life. They will guide me through a program with the goal of healing and restoration for my life, my marriage, and my family.

I created this entire situation. The things that I did opened the door for additional allegations. But I am responsible; I alone need to be disciplined and corrected. An example must be set.

It is important that you know how much I love and appreciate my wife, Gayle. What I did should never reflect in a negative way on her relationship with me. She has been and continues to be incredible. The problem was not with her, my children, or any of you. It was created 100% by me.

I have been permanently removed from the office of Senior Pastor of New Life Church. Until a new senior pastor is chosen, our Associate Senior Pastor, Ross Parsley, will assume all of the responsibilities of the office. On the day he accepted this new role, he and his wife, Aimee, had a new baby boy. A new life in the midst of this circumstance—I consider that confluence of events to be prophetic. Please commit to join with Pastor

Ross and the others in church leadership to make their service to you easy and without burden. They are fine leaders. You are blessed. I appreciate your loving and forgiving nature, and I humbly ask you to do a few things:

  1. Please stay faithful to God through service and giving.
  2. Please forgive me. I am so embarrassed and ashamed. I caused this and I have no excuse. I am a sinner. I have fallen. I desperately need to be forgiven and healed.
  3. Please forgive my accuser. He is revealing the deception and sensuality that was in my life. Those sins, and others, need to be dealt with harshly. So, forgive him and, actually, thank God for him. I am trusting that his actions will make me, my wife and family, and ultimately all of you, stronger. He didn’t violate you; I did.
  4. Please stay faithful to each other. Perform your functions well. Encourage each other and rejoice in God’s faithfulness. Our church body is a beautiful body, and like every family, our strength is tested and proven in the midst of adversity. Because of the negative publicity I’ve created with my foolishness, we can now demonstrate to the world how our sick and wounded can be healed, and how even
disappointed and betrayed church bodies can prosper and rejoice.

Gayle and I need to be gone for a while. We will never return to a leadership role at New Life Church. In our hearts, we will always be members of this body. We love you as our family. I know this situation will put you to the test. I’m sorry I’ve created the test, but please rise to this challenge and demonstrate the incredible grace that is available to all of us.

'Dr. Dino' guilty on all counts

It has been a bad couple of new cycles for the evangelical community. I am afraid It's not over yet.

Prison will turn me into a bitch

Kent Hovind, founder of Creation Science Evangelism and Dinosaur Adventure Land in Pensacola, was found guilty of 58 counts, including failure to pay $845,000 in employee-related taxes. He faces a maximum of 288 years in prison.

Source: PensacolaNewsJournal.com - 'Dr. Dino' guilty on all counts

Kent is a creationist nutball. He appears to share several traits with other Ted Haggard - Lying, deception, deliberate misrepresentation of fact.  Now he's going to jail for a long time. Who will take care of Dinosaur Adventure Land? No wait, who would go to Dinosaur Adventure land in the first place?

Jon Voisey at The Angry Astronomer has an opinion:

The Angry Astronomer - Jon Voisey My opinion is absolutely. With many crimes like murder, a large number of people that are convicted of this never do it again. If someone commits a crime, does the time, and has truly been reformed, then I have no problem with forgiveness. But this is not the case for Hovind. He's been warned for a full decade of the consequences of his actions, repeatedly showing that he thinks himself above the law. Thus, Hovind is not likely to suddenly have a revelation and decide to better himself. I'm firmly of the belief that criminals should be held for only as long as they're still inclined the commit crimes. Hovind, I expect, will never get over his self serving attitudes.

Sexually immoral conduct

Pastor Ted Haggard has been fired. A jury of his pastor peers found evidence Haggard committed "Sexually Immoral Conduct". Geez, how do you put that on a job application?

"We have decided that the most positive and productive direction for our church is his dismissal and removal," said a statement from the four pastors outside New Life Church.

Source: KRT Wire - Sexually immoral conduct noted in pastor's dismissal

What comes next? Well... the obligatory apology of course:

The news stunned and saddened people at the church, who were busy Saturday afternoon setting up for what they expect to be an overflow crowd for Sunday morning services. A letter of explanation and apology by Haggard and a "word of encouragement" from his wife, Gayle, will be read at the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services.

I'll take 100 bag of meth and some hot man sex please After this... we forgive poor past Haggard and get on with life. Oh wait... I said we, I meant THEY forgive him. I get to laugh at him and use him as the butt of bad jokes for the next few years.

I'll post the text of Haggard's apology tomorrow. It's bound to interesting.

Oh - I suggest Haggard's former pastors put him on suicide watch. This is the time when men of weak moral character tend to kill themselves.

Rick Ricchi - a church member was first (well ok not really first) to blame the devil for Haggard gay sex, drug, and deceptive proclivities. Because, it is inconceivable that Haggard is actually gay. Right?

"This makes my faith stronger knowing the devil roams the earth like a lion devouring people," said Rick Ricchi, 49, a church member for five years. "It tells me how much I need Jesus in my life . . . It makes me realize anyone can be tempted."

Right... it makes your faith stronger knowing that THE DEVIL caused Haggard's fall. What a load of crap.

*** Update ***

Care of the Non-Profit, the text of the letter firing Haggard.

Dear New Lifers and friends of New Life Church,

This is the press release from the Board of Overseers that will be released to the media this afternoon. We want you to know first what the actions of the overseers are going to be.

Please continue to pray for Pastor Ted and his family and let's all continue to stand strong together for the kingdom of God. We will get through this together. Remember, New Life Church has never been a man, or a building or anything else--we are a family.

Pastor Ross

November 4, 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
New Life Church
Colorado Springs, Colorado

We, the Overseer Board of New Life Church, have concluded our deliberations concerning the moral failings of Pastor Ted Haggard. Our investigation and Pastor Haggard's public statements have proven without a doubt that he has committed sexually immoral conduct.

The language of our church bylaws state that as Overseers we must decide in cases where the Senior Pastor has "demonstrated immoral conduct" whether we must "remove the pastor from his position or to discipline him in any way they deem necessary."

In consultation with leading evangelicals and experts familiar with the type of behavior Pastor Haggard has demonstrated, we have decided that the most positive and productive direction for our church is his dismissal and removal. In addition, the Overseers will continue to explore the depth of Pastor Haggard's offense so that a plan of healing and restoration can begin.

Pastor Haggard and his wife have been informed of this decision. They have agreed as well that he should be dismissed and that a new pastor for New Life Church should be selected according to the rules of replacement in the bylaws.

That process will begin immediately in hopes that a new pastor can be confirmed by the end of the year 2006. In the interim, Ross Parsley will function as the leader of the church with full support of the Overseers.

A letter of explanation and apology by Pastor Haggard as well as a word of encouragement from Gayle Haggard will be read in the 9:00 and 11:00 service of New Life Church.

Jasmine and Bella

Jasmine and Bella are new additions to the Mojoey household. We picked these sisters up from Seal Beach Animal Care Center this afternoon. After some adjustment, my portly minpin Thor has warmed up to the new additions.

The process was interesting. First a very long web based application, then a face-to-face meeting with my wife, son, and dog. My pet snake did not have to come.  Once the staff determined we were not going to eat the twins, we moved towards adoption. $150 and an hour later, we were on our way home.

The twins have bonded with my wife and son. The still don't like me much. But, that will change because I do most the dog walking.

I did not realize how much minpins can jump. The cleared my shoulder while sitting down and can easily reach the dinner table. Some behavior adjustments will be required.

My son took the picture above. I am sure he will shoot many many more.
