President Benigno Aquino III has my respect

President Aquino laid his political future on the line in the Philippines this week. He took a step towards freeing his people from the sexual and reproductive chains imposed by the Catholic church. Aquino is willing to risk ex-communication to stand up for the right of his people to have access to contraception and reproductive health care. Aquino is fighting the good fight.

The issue pits the powerful and conservative Catholic establishment, which says contraceptives are as sinful as abortions, against reformers who want more openness about condoms and other birth control in the impoverished Southeast Asian nation to slow population growth and help prevent disease.

I can only hope that our own leaders will someday fight the good fight too.

The Pope ,and the Catholic church should have been Chastised by every world leader when they told the people of Africa not to use Condoms . Nice to see there are some people in this world stand up for common sense .
President Aquino's action is correct but stands against the populist boxing champion turned congressman, Manny Pacquiao's Catholic faith.

Manny opposes the bill supporting birth control and family planning, stating that, "God said, 'Go out and multiply.' He did not say, just have two or three kids."

Remember, the Pacman Pacquiao was conferred the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humanities in 2009 by SWU, in part because of his humanitarian work. How is it humanitarian to support breeding Catholic-breeding-for-growth over sensible family planning?
