Photo - not a smoker

smokerI quit smoking last November. I had been a cigar smoker for most of my adult life. It’s been a struggle these last few months; especially when the pressure builds. But I’ve stayed with it, or I guess I should say, without it.

I did not consider myself a non-smoker until I pulled up behind a smoker at a traffic light. His hand was hanging out of his window with a lit cigarette hanging loosely between his fingers. The smoke drifted back to my truck. It smelled foul. It was the first time I can remember not liking the smell of tobacco smoke. It’s actually the first time I can remember getting angry at the violation of my personal space.  I shot this picture to help me remember how I felt at the time.

It happened again today with cigar smoke at the park. I started to cough as the smell of a good cigar drifted over from the golf course. I was indignant. It dawned on me that I had passed a milestone. I don’t like the smell of tobacco smoke. I must be a non-smoker, but hopefully not the annoying kind.

On the other hand, I dream about smoking cigars. How screwed up is that?

Ex-smokers seem to be a little oversensitive about secondhand smoke in my opinion. I smoke, but I ONLY smoke outside. Now, we have people griping about us smoking outside. WTF?

I'm not griping. I'm just noticing it for the first time. I never noticed before.
I was referring to other people griping, Mojoey. Your article was about your personal conviction and victory over this habit. I commend that! :)

I've noticed a trend in the last decade or so. It became okay to persecute smokers, even ostracize them.
I've noticed the trend myself. I don't understand it. In my experience, smoking is a social activity.
I smoke ,and realizes it is a stupid habit. Congrats Mojoey ! You are now one of them . People smart enough to quit.
I quit back in 2004. I had given up cigarettes, but was still smoking one or two small cigars a day. Most of the time tobacco smoke smells bad to me, but every now and then it still smells good, especially after a satisfying meal.

I recall kayaking down a river several years ago and smelling the smoke from a group of canoes who were barely visible down stream from us. The smoke really carries.
