Where did Mojoey go?

Sorry everyone. I went to China on a business trip and found it impossible to update my blog. The government blocks blogger, Facebook, and Twitter. I was able to get to Gmail a few times, but even that was spotty. The last time I visited China in 2007, everything worked fine. Not now though, it is a total pain in the ass.

I’ve just now returned home. My check list was:

Shower

  • Kiss the wife
  • Pet the dog
  • Check the blog.

Time to eat and take a nap. I’ll catch up with a few posts soon.

Thanks. It is so good to be home.
Welcome back! I just came looking for you today, saw a reply to a comment mentioning China, and now here you are : )
Welcome back. I was very glad to see something other than the dead pideon.
Welcome back. Hopefully your trip was good and productive.

It was, thanks.
Glad you are back. Did you miss blogging, or was it nice not to have to think about it?
Joey -- you need to download Tor Browser from http://www.torproject.org/ for the next time you are visiting China. Tor is an 'onion router', meaning it wraps your IP and activities in a bunch of layers (bouncing it off various TOR severs around the world), giving you very effective anonymity and allowing you to browse without the 'Great Firewall of China' stopping you. It's used by dissidents all the time, but it's also just used by regular travelers who want to visit sites the Chinese government blocks.

Assuming you are using Windows, they have a browser bundle you can download that starts up Tor and launches it's own install of Firefox. Perhaps the only thing that's wrong with Tor is that browsing will be slow, but if you are just using it to update the blog then you should be good to go.

I used it extensively the last time I was in Iran, for much the same reasons.
