An end to abstinence only education?

I was reading Politico this afternoon when I saw a post by Ben Smith titled, An end to abstinence only, in black and white.  The main point made me so happy that I clapped my hands.

In reference to a passage from the President’s budget:

This Budget eliminates funding for Community-Based Abstinence Education, the mandatory Title V Abstinence Education program, the Compassion Capital Fund, and Rural Community Facilities.

Did I just read the last gasp for federally funded abstinence only sex education programs? I sure hope so.

Sure sounds like good news. About damn time we stop pouring money into something known to be ineffective.
The only problem I see is until religion is kept out of politics, the threat of it coming back is always there.
Of course, I am happy to see some rationality displacing religious zealotry, but, I don't think that abstinence should be excluded from sex education programs. After all it is the only sure way to avoid pregnancy and disease spread.

Preaching abstinence only, on the other hand, is idiocy because only a very few people can do it. The vast majority of people need to be fully educated in practical methods of avoiding problems related to sexual relations.
