Youth leader Eric Caverly arrested for sexual assault

EricCaverlyYouth leader Eric Caverly has the sex drive of a man in his early 20s if his boast of having sex with a teenaged girl up to 400 times is to be believed. The affair started when the girl…. wait a second here… the rapes started when the girl was 16. She was his babysitter.

The sexual relationship continued for most of the next three years, the documents show. The alleged victim would spend nights at the Caverly home, even a week or more at a time. The girl, who is now a 19-year-old woman, told investigators that most of the sexual encounters happened in the basement of Caverly's home.

The woman told investigators that the relationship with Caverly ended in October 2010 due to fighting between the two and Caverly's jealousy. The affidavit says she was forced to file a police report after revealing the sexual encounters to her parents and to her therapist.

I’ve learned that churches call a youth pastor a “lay youth leader” when they want to distance themselves from their former pastor’s crimes. Was Caverly a youth pastor? I’m betting that by most definitions the answer would be yes.

The babysitter angle is a new one. I’ll have to add that to the list of abuse vectors. I’m sure he will claim it was love.

Caverly worked at Springs Community Church in Colorado Springs. A check of their website shows no acknowledgement of the arrest or comments on the story. Check out their website. It raises all of my hackles. It’s hip. It’s fresh. It’s about building a relationship with the big guy upstairs. Oh, and pay no attention to the predator in our youth ministry.

Am glad you're perfect ... what a moron!!!
He was not a youth pastor. He was a volunteer. There was a background check. The church has absolutely nothing to do with this. I am definitely not saying this is right or acceptable by any means. However, I do not see anywhere that it was mentioned about him working at a different church now. He has not been at SCC for over two years. Springs Community Church is just like any other church, there are people who are not perfect.

100% he did wrong! 3 years is not rape or abuse...she and he had a relationship. She broke it off when things were not going her way, she borke it off and then wanted revenge...well, she has it...was it not enough that she cried wolf about her family, got attention (plus a lot more) and then had second thoughts and cried rape and abuse...come on people she was sixteen years old...she knew what she was doing. The average age for teens engaging in sex is 14...she knew. He was wrong and she was/is wrong.
family friend, you are an idiot. Sixteen having sex with other sixteen year olds is common but 16 with a grown married man/father in his late thirties is RAPE. He knew better she was just a pawn to his disgusting behavior. Get a clue if you had a daughter that was raped by her youth pastor, i'm sure you would have a different tale to tell. Sex with children is wrong, no ifs ands or buts about it.

HE WAS NOT A YOUTH PASTOR!!!!! He was a volunteer, unpaid member of the church. And he and his family haven't been going to that church for a couple of years. She was 16 when it started. She knew what she was getting into. She knew it all 200-400 times they slept together. She went to his house all those times as well. She could have chosen to not be the babysitter any more. But no. she kept on going over there time and time again. She is just as much to blame as he is. He is certainly not innocent in all of this. But neither is she. I hope the courts take this into consideration.
as much to blame as he is... married, with children. adopted children. U R as much a monster as he is.

Amy and sbj1964 Fact are facts and you must know this "young lady" to be siding with her actions so strongly. I believe in the end it will be clear that she pursued this adult man...yes, husband and father...and he did wrong by not walking away from this troubled "yound lady". This "young lady" was not raped, molested or abused...she PARTICIPATED and went back for MORE. I do have a daughter and I have taught her not to chase men and I know where she is and with whom she is with...if she makes a bad decision I will hold HER accountable. Regarding this situation they BOTH are responsible for the ruin of his family.

By the way...you both have shown your own values by the vocabulary you use...I stick to the facts and don't call names...who's the adult here?
Familyfriend - have you ever hear the term, pot calling the kettle black? I hope so as it applies to you. The victim in this case is an underage girl. The law says she does not have the capacity to make a reasonable judgement in the case of a sexual relationship with and adult. Per our laws the girl is blameless. The youth pastor bears responsibly for each of his acts of rape. It is rape too, again under the law. You can make up a definition for rape and molestation is you wish, but it has no moral standing and shows he darkness of your morality just as much as SBJ calling you silly names. Do you really thing you set an example by going after the victim? Do they teach you nothing in church?
Familyfriend - when you report a comment - it goes to me for moderation. I think I"ll let this post stand as it addresses your ignorance and bias.
Thank you, Ann for your comment. I haven't been able to look at this article for over a year, because of the horrible comments that were made about her. She was one of my best friends at the time, and there was no amount of manipulation he did not use on her. It breaks my heart to hear people condemn a young girl for "ruining" his life when she actually saved countless other girls by stepping up. Anyways, thank you for your post. I would have lost control on familyfriend if i had seen this a year ago, and even now it's so hard for me to pray for them and hope they find peace. But the same God that restores rape victims, heals the sick, redeems the hopeless, and paints sunsets is the same God who created familyfriend, and even eric caverly. My mind can't really comprehend it, and I'm so thankful it doesn't have to. I know you may never read this . . . no one might . . . but i am crying for some reason seeing someone i don't know stand in the gap for a girl i'd give my life for. Praying for you, Ann :) thank you for your heart of gold :)

Rape: to seize or take away by force.
familyfriend, if you only knew.
I totally agree Ann ! Why do these ignorant shit heads insist on defending the indefensible ? Anyone who tries to justify the rape of children is a sick bastard ! If you are so twisted and warped by christian morals that you can't see that you are a complete retard ,then you are part of the reason why these PredoPastors exist in the first place ! They Prey on the young, and the weak, and the SLOW . The Slow meaning mentally limited Christians .

I'm an atheist, and I still don't think its RAPE. It think its a terrible choice, and reprehensible, but its hardly rape. Many states have age of consent laws that are lower then 16.

I'm 27 and 16 year old girls look like children to me, but I'm not around them all day either. Its easy to throw around labels like rape and use strong language to back up emotional responses to some thing we don't like, but its not always right. Its not that black and white.

I could say 'EVERY SOLDIER IN IRAQ IS A MURDER'. Would that be the same? Its true, killing is murder. Some times its not that simple.

Saying 'ANY ONE who tries to justify (x) is a sick bastard' is far more of a christian statement...

I KNOW WHAT I BELIEVE. ANY ONE WHO QUESTIONS IT IS JUST SICK IN THE HEAD!
It's rape under the law, and may be more serious if they throw in charges that he used his position to exploit the girl.
Law =/= morality.

Generally, laws back what is moral, but not always. For instance, laws that ban the growth and sales of Hemp in the united states.

Not to mention, its rape under the law if a male and female have sex, and both are legally intoxicated. Federal law says that the male is the aggressor and is taking advantage of the female, even if both are drunk (even if they are married, etc).

Furthermore, look up the Romeo and Juliet acts. I'm not implying that this falls under that act, but its an example of some thing that was 'rape' under the law, literally last month, and is now not illegal.

As an ardent atheist, you should understand that popular opinion is not always right.
While I agree with Law =/= morality, I do not agree that what this man did should be considered legal. A pastor screwing his charges is an ethical a moral transgression and a violation of his duty of care for the young minds in his charge.

Romeo and Juliet acts do not cover this situation.
I didn't say it should be legal, and I didn't say it is covered under the Romeo and Juliet act. In fact, I said it doesn't fall under it in my last post.

We have the same problem.

"A pastor screwing his charges is an ethical a moral transgression and a violation of his duty of care for the young minds in his charge"

Its a moral transgression, yes. A violation of duty. Yes. So is, say, quitting a job with no notice. Or, say, leaving a job for some one else to do because you are too lazy. Or, in computers, making things so insanely complicated no one can take over your job in the future. Should these things be illegal?

Note again, I'm not saying it should be legal. Or illegal. I'm just saying, being amoral doesn't mean it should be illegal. Laws should back what is so dangerous to society we need protection from it, and as such, is amoral. Its a question of HOW BAD is fucking your 16 year old students when you are 37... Pretty bad.

But its just not not black and white. What if the charge is older then him? Shouldn't there be some leniency if its obvious it was a matter of 'love' (which in such a case is probably just horniness with justifications piled on top). Or, on the flip side of that coin, shouldn't coercion have to be proven to some extent? It might be hard to 'prove', but its pretty easy to see when intent is in question, and when some one is clearly taken advantage of. My problem with these laws is their senseless nature. IF YOU ARE UNDER 18 YOU CANNOT CONSENT. Or 16 or 15. Or what ever. This is just dumb... These girls are refered to as children at 17 and women at 18? Please...

Its just scary when ever people blindy, passionately, follow any law. Even murder, we should question its legitimacy as a law. EVERY THING. I mean, obviously murder is harmful to society. But with out analyzing it, how ever shallowly, you are following it blindly (taking it on faith).

So... Do I think what this man did should be illegal? In this case, were I a judge, I would have no choice but to convict him. There are no other outlets to prevent it from happening again. Should it be a felony, that carries prison and carries sex offender registration? Hell no. He should have an offense that can easily be found in a background check, but one that could be expunged with time, and that wouldn't ruin his life completely. Maybe there should be a list similar to the sex offender list that places who work with kids only have access to. You just go to the court house and get access. I don't know. But how it is now does not work, and does more harm.

See.. this is the main difference. Violent and child oriented offenders never change. These girls were close to adults. They look like adults. When I was 20 I found some 16 year olds attractive. I've met some girls that are 16 or 17 even now that I notice, but as soon as words spew out of their pubecent mouths, any presumption changes. I would be hard pressed to be attracted to any one who talks as such.

CHILDREN are not close to adults. They look like children. Some people like to get flogged with spatuals while they do it, some people like kids. They cant help it or change it. The ones who like kids, I feel bad for, sure, but we need to protect OUR children from them. They are a danger and should be monitored for the rest of their lives. The damage they do is irreverable and will cause them to have problems forever. But even in these cases, we need to find a way to deal with these people. Sex offender registries and socitial ignorance just seem to be making things worse. Many are going off the grid and just going down in flames because they cant function in society.

Saying some one who abuses their power is a child molester gives me the rage face, so much. Any one who trys to defend this position is a SICK FUCK!
Dude - it's a total mind fuck. Some of the cases I've seen make me question our sanity. I remember a case where an 18 youth pastor (as if that were possible), was arrested for sleeping with his 17.6 year old girlfriend of 3 years. Arrested, convicted, and now a sex offender who is married to the same girl. But there must be a standard. A point at which we judge adult and child. Unfortunately, it's arbitrary. A jury is supposed to take all the factors you mention into account, but it rarely happens.

My opinion here - A older youth pastor sleeping with his charges is morally wrong and should also be against the law. Let the poor bastard plead his case to the jury and then live with results. Perhaps it will serve as a deterrent to the next horny pastor.
HE WAS NOT A PAID STAFF at SCC... while what he did was indeed wrong and at fault, I think she is equally wrong. I know Eric and his family very well, our families were close until I moved out of state a few years ago. I don't know who this girl is, tho I am sure I know her as we are close in age and probably went to youth group together, but I pray that she realizes that God is just and and will take care of all involved. @mojoey do me a favor and get all of your facts straight and post an entire story not just snips...

OK - so he was not a paid staff member. He was still an adult working with children So what is the difference? A paycheck?

I did get the facts straight. In fact, I stated the facts and speculated on their nature.

And... you ignorant fuck, the law states she cannot be held responsible in the relationship no matter how much you want to paint her as a whore. Now serious, are you a Christian?
bearb8, is nothing more than another sick F@ck trying to blame the child for the crimes of this Monster ! How does one like him sleep at night ? Bearb8 should go ,and pray to his imaginary god. And if he hears an answer then we have it ; he is Psychotic, and needs mental health workers to help him from being a Fool ! Hearing voices Bear ?
