We were all virgins until we were not

Whenever I hear Christian stories of chastity, abstinence, and born again virginity, I laugh to myself. We were all virgins until we were not. It was a club most of us were desperate to get out of. I want my children to abstain sex until they are mature enough to handle the responsibilities that come with sex. Hoping that they will remain virgins until marriage is a fool’s hope. Hormones, peer pressure, and… teen love are a recipe for breaking ironclad pledges – even one sealed by a chastity ring. In the heat of the moment, in that moment when we don’t think but instead desperately dream, we are all left with our own awkward memories. To deny this is to deny reality. I choose to educate my kids instead.

WeWaited.com and WeAbstain.com are two websites that cater to the Christian pipe dream of chastity. Of course, it’s a dream with a silver lining.

WeWaited.com is a place where virgin singles can meet other virgin singles online. WeAbstain.com, the sister website, caters to virgin and non-virgin (or "born-again virgin") singles who are abstaining until marriage. The sites not only provide a safe environment for abstainers to meet one another, they also invite others to abstain from sex until marriage. Its Second Life virtual reality site hosts 11 Abstinence Parks and five Virgin Parks, with 3D chat service open only to Silver and Platinum members.

Call me jaded, but this is a counter productive scam. I wonder how many young man (and old men) sign up just for access to unlimited virgins?

Oh crap. I just lost my comment.

I think you're not jaded, just being realistic. I bet a lot of pervs sign up for those sites specifically to find what they're looking for.

I was talking about how we're dealing with my 16 year old son and his first girlfriend. I think I've been way more open with him than my parents ever were with me. Because she lives 40+ miles away, we end up with the situation where he stays overnight there or she stays over with us.

We have set rules about who sleeps where and for how long, and I'm sure the rules are a bit lighter over at her house. I send Nolan text messages that say things like "Don't make any babies!" as a reminder every now and then, but don't nag him in any way. They choose not to stay at his dad's house because the step-mom has threatened to drive Nolan a few miles away to HER parents' house at midnight, and then pick him up in the morning. She says, "I KNOW HOW TEENAGERS ARE!"

My hubby and I think she's projecting just a bit. She used to run with bikers... anyhow, that's neither here nor there.

I felt a whole lot better about what our situation is after reading about Dutch attitudes to teen sex: http://healthland.time.com/2010/09/09/what-the-u-...

I think we're okay.
Teens having sex ? What ? I lost my Cherry at 13 to a preachers daughter who was 16 ! Best summer of my life ! until she went to High school ,and I off to middle school. Broke my heart, but learned a lot ! Teen age sex is normal ,and the more information we can give them to be safe while in a term DOING IT . The better .
