When we look back 50 years from now

When we look back at this time in American history 50 years from now people will think America lost its collective mind in large part because of the idiocy of Sarah Palin. In response to President Obama’s use of the term “Sputnik moment” in last night’s State of the Union address, Palin asserted that Sputnik bankrupted the Soviet Union and was therefor an inappropriate motivator. She, of course, completely misses the point and manages to get Soviet history completely wrong too.

Palin responded, "That was another one of those WTF moments when [Mr. Obama] so often repeated the 'Sputnik Moment' that he would aspire Americans to celebrate. He needs to remember that what happened back then with the former communist USSR and their victory in that race to space, yeah, they won, but they also incurred so much debt at the time that it led to the inevitable collapse of the Soviet Union."

D’oh – historians, please be nice. Many of us understand that she is not smart enough to lead us. We are just waiting for the rest of America to come to the same realization.

I was waiting for Greta Van Susteren to ask the million dollar question: Sarah Palin, what was Sputnik?

This is one of the biggest problems with the USA. There are to many people passing on false information and getting large amounts of media time. It isn't just Palin but many within the conservative element of the population. The only way to get this to stop is to get people more concerned about their own lives and not the lives of people who don't deserve the concern.
Sadly the UK is slowly losing its ability to keep its own form of this kind of conservative idiocy out of the media and the press. And if Murdoch gets to have News Corp. buy up BSkyB, it's only going to get worse.
There was a study out that the NYT reviewed yesterday concerning the level of knowledge of US students. Science scores were not the lowest - history was. Palin, Beck, etc. will be remembered in a similar manner as Father Coughlin is today.
Just over fifty years ago, this country suffered because of the influence and interference of Joseph McCarthy. We continue to suffer from his success, even if he was a failure by most, if not all proper standards.

If we are lucky, the worst that can will be said about Palin in fifty years is that her name becomes synonymous with, "one that is cheerfully clueless," e.g. C'mon Palin!
I think the serious slide into insanity began when Bush was voted in. It must have been hard to come up with someone stupider than him but they did it.

I just hope that the next people you vote in don't come up with an ingenious plan to usher in Armageddon because they're tired of waiting. With some one like palin in the running, I would say there is a good chance of that happening.
