God told me to do it

I read about murders as part of my research into religion. I am interested in why religious people kill others. Most often its the same reasons we hear from the general community, with rage and jealously topping the list.. But sometimes these people claim God told them to kill. What bothers me is that the press reports it as normal activity instead of the action of an insane person.

TheresaRobbinsTheresa Robbins claims she “got signs from God” who told her to “distribute the world order information”. She’s obviously got a screw loose.

Theresa Gail Robbins, 48, was taken into custody without incident after pulling out a handgun and shooting Greg Brasch, of McKinney, once in the chest at Bizzy Bee pest control. Brasch was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Carrollton police.

She killed her best friend because God told her to what?

When asked why she shot him, Robbins replied, "I was expecting someone else to come in" and that God told her to shoot.

At a minimum I would expect to hear she was scheduled for a psychological evaluation. All we get is a sentence referring to depression. But this story was reported in Texas, where God talks to people all the time.

Of course, it could have been the Devil.

Think she's getting "signs from God" mixed up with "signs from the Devil".

It is the act of an insane person to claim that God or the Devil talk to them. Right? Why can’t we just say that?

Perhaps not insane. Deeply brain washed, for sure, though. If so, then I was insane once. That would make embracing rational thought the cure! That's why I would prefer brain washed. Though, I never believed god ever wanted me to shoot someone. So, maybe I'm being a bit too sympathetic on this one.

Admittedly, there are clinically insane people out there with bizarre religious thoughts-- and the actions to go along with it. Maybe this woman really is one of them.
Did the reporter say the devil part? Because that is insane.

nah, that came from the comments.
No, it was in the comments.
Notice how christians will play both sides of the fence when it comes to this type of action. Those that hear the voice call it god but the christian pr runs to the devil to explain why one of theirs would kill for no good reason.
How come when god tells Moses to commit genocide, or commands the Israeli's to exterminate the seven Canaanite nations, or President Bush to kill osama bin laden, people jump up and cheer like they are at a ball game, but when the same god tells their neighbor to shoot or molest their kid, they scream that its the devil and not god?

If I kill and molest you, it is of god. If you kill and molest me, it is of the devil. More than a bit DELUDED and hypocritical.

There is no end the atrocities god has told people to commit in his name. I'm not sure that the defense "my invisible freind told me to do it" should warrant anything other than a visit to the looney bin for a very, very long time.
She was not religious.

She has a mental problem that led to her having a psychotic break. It runs in the family and they got it from their father. I know them.

She was mixing a lot of bits and pieces of reality with bits and pieces of made-up in her mind. Church, or religion in general, were not a big part of her life. Yes she believed in God but was far from being religious. No church for her as long as I knew her. And that was 25 years by the time it happened.

This unfortunate event was not about religion at all. It was an undiagnosed, un-medicated, paranoid mind running loose with perception of reality. How do I know? She was a friend of 25 years and my girlfriend of 6 years by that time.
