How to tell right from wrong

DSC_7112

I drove by this sign yesterday. My son looked at me with a strange expression on his face as I laughed out loud. Do we need a pastor to tell right from wrong? As adults, don’t most of us know the answer to this simple question already? We learn it as children. It’s reinforced as we grow and mature, and besides, most of us know the answer intuitively.

I sign like this pushes me away. Why don’t they see that?

They're not trying to pull you in. They're trying to pull in sheeple.
With the education system we have and the way many religious people act, someone does need to tell people what is right or wrong. I think the education systems that blame both parties for anything involving conflict as a failure. Many times both parties are blamed for being wrong in conflicts and when you do that many kids are confused about what is and isn't proper conduct as adults. It doesn't help that many religious claim they are always right no matter what acts they take if it is for their religion.
That they would dedicate a sermon to this topic tells me that the clergy at that church are concerned about their parishoners. Maybe they have a point.
I understand a child would have to be told, but adult parishioners. Makes me fear for the future..after I laugh.

Part of being an atheist is that I can think for myself. I can discern right from wrong on my own. I don't need some holy book or clergy to tell me who to hate or their version of right and wrong.

It's not the unchurched who are running around bombing womens' health clinics and beating LGBT people to death, is it? I think we're doing just fine figuring out right from wrong.
What gets me about the Christian assumption that we can't tell right from wrong without the guidance of a pastor is that so often, I think they are wrong in their moral judgments.

The way so many of them value the potential life of an unborn fetus over the life of the mother. The way so many of them say every child deserves a chance at life, then bitterly begrudge any social service or assistance given to the child once it's - you know - an actual, living, breathing child.

The way so many of them think that "what you do unto the least of these" is irrelevant to how they should treat illegal aliens or addicts.

The way so many of them think it's okay to lie, cheat, and steal, as long as it's in what they consider a good cause.... I could go on, buy why?
Not all, but a lot of adults do not know right from wrong. I see it everyday. For most when given a choice especially if they do don't think that people will mind or notice, they do not choose what is right. I have been disappointed time and time again because of this, even hurt. My rule is, if you have to ask then you probably know the answer.
We recently paid for something for a sister because she was in a bind and on a very tight budget and it was understood that she could not afford her trip to visit us (which by the way was her idea) if she took care of another situation that came up. We said we will pay the entire purchase instead of splitting the cost so you can still come out and visit us. She came out and then made a splurge purchase for herself. A little less then the amount that should have been paid to us because of false impression. What do we do. Definitely not fair because we only suggested it because of our impression of how broke she was.

I have to disagree with you that most adults don't know right and wrong. It isn't that they don't know but elements within society has taught some that it is ok to take advantage of others as long as it helps you. Look at Republicans and the way they make claims that cutting taxes will reduce the deficit yet all it has ever done is raise it. They know they can make this claim because a tax break that ruins this nation helps them and most Americans seem to not know how harmful it is because they just go along. I figure most of the politicians that push this agenda knows it doesn't actually work but because it helps them get more power and money they don't care.
Tell her, don't let this kind of thing brew! She may have just been foolish in her pride of not wanting you to feel bad for her because she is on hard times . Talk it out .Family ?
