Youth Pastor Matthew Overstreet arrested

In the interest of accuracy Matthew Jonas Overstreet is a former youth pastor. However, he allegedly started the abuse of his 13-year-old victim while he was a youth pastor at St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Plano, Texas. Overstreet stands accused of sexual assault.

Police said over the next few years 25-year-old Matthew Jonas Overstreet continued sending her sexual messages. He allegedly sexually assaulted her in December.

I recently conducted a lengthy e-mail exchange with a member of the faithful who pressed me to stop reporting these crimes because they “hurt the church.” One of her arguments centered on the Christian theme of divine judgment. She kept insisting that God will judge these men harshly. I asked about redemption by faith and the whole free ticket out of punishment that prayer offers. I mean, the only unpardonable sin is supposed to be rejecting the divinity of God. All this other stuff is pardonable.  So what if God judges them harshly? Exactly what punishment are we talking here? She had no meaningful answers.

I feel better knowing that these people are treated to a few years of real justice while alive here on earth.

Texas has issues.

LOL yeah I have heard these types of claims made by christians but when you point out that asking for forgiveness will end any punishment they then try to tap dance around that. I wonder how many within the church knew something was going on but didn't step up?

Wow do you believe everything you read on the news? That is unfortunate. Did you know that someone who has a relationship with a 15 year old who is over the age of 17 gets the same title who rapes a woman or sexually abuses a child? Read other articles on Matthew Overstreet and see what you find out. I will tell you what and if what he did was wrong, but everyone makes mistakes and it is unfortunate that the news likes to blow everything out of the water and this person;s life is ruined ,guilty or innocent... one sin isn't greater than the next. Jesus died for all sins.. your mistakes are not better than his, if he is found guilty, you just assume he is guilty...

It is not RAPE, it is Statutory Rape... much different.. regardless of what the state says about the ability of a 15 year old to give consent, obvioulsy gave consent.. he wasn't 40, it was 4 years ago..

All I can say is that I knew this guy in High School and he was not a good person. He was a bully who singled out anyone who was a little different or not in the "in-crowd." This is a "person of God?". I do not trust or have anything to do with organized religion because of people like this.

I do not now this guy but why is it that people defend this guy. Are we not taught as humans that you can not have sex with a minor, COME ON PEOPLE! Its not rape its Statutory rape.... much different.. What kind of statement is that. Even if she consented he took something from this girl that she can never get back.
If it was my daughter and some creep did this I might be writing this from jail. It is unacceptable to defend this guy. He was in a position of TRUST and he abused it. Seems likes that happens alot with Religion.
All I can say is, who let him in the house at 3 in the morning. Something is just not right. Where are the parents.....single parent out for the night? There have been no forthcoming comments from the parents, which I can only conclude they were clueless and very absent from their daughter's life. I don't think this young woman is all that innocent......she did let her perpetrator come in the house.

Im not sure whether to laugh at all the people saying Matt was a bully because of how preposterous it is or whether to be angry because they're passing judgement on a man they don't even know. Matthew Overstreet is the kindest, most loving and caring person I have ever met. He has influenced hundreds of teens lives for the better. He has helped bring so many people to Christ and has helped make their lives better. Yes, he messed up. Yes, he will most likely go to jail. Is that not bad enough? Does everyone have to make fun of him and yell at him and spread obvious lies about him? He's suffering enough embarrassment not to mention the fact that his life is practically ruined. I am sincerely sorry for all the people who won't get to hear Matt preach and spread the Word of God.

God will judge him. He has obviously made it clear who he really is. I'm not surprised by this because he was very creepy and manipulative with me. I never said anything bc look at the people on here still brainwashed by his smoke screen. I do however feel bad for his parents because they really are good people. God will judge him and so will the court.

Matt was a huge bully...this doesn't surprise me in the least. He deserves what is coming to him.
Has there been any news since the law got involved? What will happen to Matt?
