Father Edward Maloney suspended

An 80-year-old retired priest has been removed from ministry after the Catholic church found evidence he sexually abused two boys.

The archdiocese learned of the allegation several months ago, according to a letter sent Nov. 7 by the Rev. John R. Manz, the auxiliary bishop of Chicago.

The archdiocese’s Independent Review Board reviewed the allegation and found credible evidence of abuse, and Francis Cardinal George accepted the recommendation that Maloney not engage in any form of ministry, Manz said in the letter.

It’s a little late to stop further abuse. At 80 the best they can hope for is that he will make it to trial.

Rev. Maloney served in many churches.

From 1955 to 1959, St. Simeon in Bellwood; from 1959 through 1966, St. Columbkille, on Chicago's West Side; for about six months in 1966, through November, St. Ambrose, 1012 E. 47th St.; 1966 to 1974, Precious Blood, 2411 W. Congress Parkway; 1974 to 1975, St. David in Bridgeport; 1975 to 1996, St. Mark in Chicago; 1996 to 1997, Santa Maria del Popolo in Mundelein; 1997 to 1999, Mission San Juan Diego in Arlington Heights.

I’ve lost count of the priests accused this year. So many children hurt…

Devil in sheep's clothing. As a former parishioner of that church & knowing that priest
there ARE more victims. I hope they find the courage to come forward & start the healing process.

Please dont let the work that God has done in the lives of all those who have had great Godly eperiences at St. Mark's be stripped from our memories. What God has given us no man can take away..

Just wondering, were you a parishioner back in the 80s? Also, how do you know there are more who can come forward? I'm still at shock but also acknowledge that people are capable of doing bad things. I hope that everyone that needs some sort of healing can find it the best way they can.
There are priests that have done wrong, whether it's abuse, stealing of money, or what have you. Then again, there are plenty of people in general that do bad things, believers, nonbelievers, or those who don't identify either way. How one chooses to move forward after something like this happens at their church or any other institution is their decision. Moving forward does not necessarily mean forgetting, it means moving forward-learning from the experience, never forgetting it, and then if they choose to, maybe even being more careful.
And then the question comes up why people don't go to church anymore and why contributions are down....here's your answer. Blind faith is just that, blind. And for those blowing sunshine up everyone else's skirt about how your faith and your God; I and millions of other people would agree that God wouldn't approve of this inappropriate behavior by a man of the cloth.

Before judging others, look in the mirror. We all have faults and we are judged by God. I beg for forgiveness everyday, I know I have have been a sinner.
It's your disgusted friend again. For all of those who would stand in front of lightning rod for this perv I'll pray for you. Not! You just can't cure ignorance. Here's something to believe in; the archdiocese of Chicago ha a list of pervs just like this one. Check it out why don't you. I was a member of that parish many, many years ago. I was one of the lucky that wasn't victimized by this perv. I'll thank God for that.
Not sure what evidence there was for the cited case. I can tell you that I was a member of his parish on the westside for years. I went to Quigley Seminary and Fr. Ed drove a group of us to school every day. He drove me home, on several ocassions and never did anything inappropriate. He took me to basketball games, etc. He was at our house many times. Point is that I wouldn't be, too ,quick to judgement. I know there are plenty that have abused kids. Fr. Ed had plenty of chances when we were with him and nothing happened, ever!

Anyone who molests a child should be punished severely. Keep in mind, however, these are still ALLEGATIONS. Everyone loves to jump on the anti catholic band wagon at times like this. There HAVE BEEN OTHER priests in the Chicago area FALSELY accused of sexual abuse - most notably the beloved Cardinal Bernadin. It's the word of one against the word of another. That simple. Like the other post, I also know this man, and believe he could never be responsible of such a thing. I remain open to the possibility I'm wrong. All of you so quick to judge should be skeptical, but open to the possibility this is another person trying to get A BUNCH OF COLD HARD CASH at the expense of a man's life long ministry and reputation. If he did it, God help Father Ed. If they are lying, God help the accusers for doing this to a man who sacrificed and devoted his life to helping others.

I was watching t.v. the other night when I heard the news, I had lock jaw for about an hour. This man was not just my pastor, but he also was my boss. I remember one year... it was Holy Thursday. My mom and I were attending a vigil mass where the church was in total darkness and a procession of priests entered all making their way to the beautiful cross at the altar where they each climbed a ladder to kiss the feet of our crucified Lord. One by one they took their turn until the last one to ascend was Fr. Maloney. We all watched so reverently.
The feet at the bottom of the cross stuck out like a shelf and the ladder was just about a foot below that. What happened next would stay in my memory for ever. As Fr. Maloney made his way up the shaky ladder he gained speed and just as he reached the statue's feet, something happened. A loud bang broke the silence and echoed through St. Mark's Chruch. Fr. Maloney had climbed the ladder a little too high and banged his head on the Lord's feet. I knew then something was not right, God was surely trying to tell us something.

So, you saw Father Edward Maloney bump his head and that is the sign that tells you he is guilty? You have got to be kidding!
I went to puertorico with Father Maloney at the same exact time this so called incident occurred, 25 yrs. ago, just Father and I, and at no point did I feel insecured. infact, I couldnt have felt any safer!!! I used to have sleep overs at Foxlake with some of the guys from around Thomas @ Campbell, of my choosing, and also just Father and I. At no point did Father approach me with some gay intentions. For all of you, that where raised around St. Marks 25yrs. ago, know damn well, Father Maloney is a SAINT, and only helped with good intentions. Im still in contact with father and just had lunch with him last week. Father is in great spirits and still continues to pray for us all!!! Dude, are you sure it was Father, that did this, or are you, just still tripping off that LSD that most of us tried back in the days??? Seek some help BRO. and there is other ways of getting lawsuits without ruining a good mans reputation,GOOFFBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I graduated from St. Mark in 1978 and knew Father Maloney. A very kind man and can't believe these allegations. I will keep him and his accusers in my prayers.
Father Ed passed away today...May he rest in peace.

I knew Father Maloney at St. Simeons Church in Bellwood Il. I would never believe such a thing of him. Nor would my brothers. He is the priest that kept me in perspective during the most difficult of times in my life. He was the very best of the best, I am saddened by this but will remain in his corner . Never could this wonderful man be the monster they say he is, NO. He was the most influencial priest in my life.
