Witchcraft, Wicca and politics

I keep a news feed open just for Wicca. I don’t many stories on the subject. I read about them because I find the Wicca movement disturbing, but not in threatening way. And as cults go, they are kind of cute, what with all their skyclad rituals (NSFW picture). I mean, who gets naked out in the bush for their faith beside Wiccans?

I stumbled across a post on  The Wild Hunt titled The Witchcraft-Obsessed Bush Administration.  In a weird déjà vu type moment, I realized that I’ve read this post several times before, except the word Witchcraft was replaced with the word Atheism.

Try it:

…it also seems to confirm a sneaking suspicion among modern Pagans that Bush and his administration had a unique obsession with Witchcraft and the occult.

Who knew we were brothers-in-arms?

It sounds like another group wanting to be the victim. Yeah there might be some things that happen to both the Wiccas and atheist. I very much doubt that it will do any good pointing this out since most in either group seem to not want much to do with each other.
Religious freedom is a serious issue for people who want freedom OF religion and freedom FROM religion. And yes, rights in both camps got trampled under the Bush administration.

Contemporary paganism - which includes a whole bunch more religions than Wicca - has a lot more to it than the less than 2% that do naked rituals where mosquitoes can bite them. Most contemporary pagan religions (but not all) are very opposed to religious proselytization (sp?) of any kind. If you can get past the fact that we are religious and just focus on the fact that protecting your rights in turn protects ours, there's actually quite a lot that could be accomplished.
Hi Diana and Mojoey:

Diana, Mojoey likes to poke fun at us Wiccans/Pagans, but he's pretty good natured about it. I have some good discussions about Wicca here with him and some of his frequent commenters. I do agree with you that we share a common foe in those who preach a monotheistic eliminationism. Sometimes I'm so happy to be an idol worshiper! :)
