I stumbled upon an interesting statistical graphic. It shows Believers as a percentage of the global population. The United States is all red (Christians from Various churches) and Yellow (Catholics) with some orange (protestants). While China and Russia are black (nonreligious).
Much of the world is Yellow (catholic) or blue (Islam).

Its also area's with no dominant religion. and i dont think they counted the effect culture can have in replacing religion.
And some of the western countries are shown as the dominant religion (with no regard for what part of the population that might be). e.g. where i'm from - New Zealand - is about 50% christian - 40% non religious - 10% other. which is hardly whats represented on the map. (i'm not entirely sure about the stats but they should be close)
